Which Countries Have the Most Educated Adults?

Key Takeaways

  • Canada has the highest share of adults with college or university qualifications at 64%, followed by Ireland (59%), Japan (58%), and South Korea (58%).
  • China (152.4M), India (119.2M), and the U.S. (93.0M) have the largest numbers of college-educated adults.
  • Japan has more college-educated adults (35.1M) than Germany and France combined (30.4M).

Among Canadian adults, 25% have a two-year college diploma as their highest qualification, while 39% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Statistics Canada credits the country’s college sector and highly educated immigrant population for its leading position.

The U.S. ranks eighth at 52%, well above the OECD average of 43%. At the bachelor’s degree level or higher, the U.S. (41%) is slightly ahead of Canada (39%), meaning Canada’s overall advantage is driven by its much larger share of adults with shorter college qualifications.

China and India Have the Most College-Educated Adults

Population size reshuffles the ranking. China has the most adults with college or university qualifications at 152.4 million, based on its 2020 census, followed by India (119.2 million) and the U.S. (93.0 million).

Yet only 18% of working-age adults in China and 16% in India hold these qualifications, compared with 52% in the U.S.

Together, these three countries account for 56% of the 647.1 million college-educated adults across the 47 countries. Canada, despite leading by share, ranks 12th by total number at 13.7 million.

It's mainly white Canadians with gender-studies honors majors (no joke). Perfect use of hard earned taxpayer money on higher ed.

Are you referring to joyful education or elite education?

Maybe you can ask AI about the number of STEM college students.

I know that China has 110 million STEM university graduates.
Chinese Higher Education Gross Enrollment Rate for high school graduates has surpassed 60% in recent years, up from roughly 30% in 2012. It's the vast majority of older generations didn't get college or university education.

The population born in 2025 is 7.92 million. The number of admissions for the college entrance examination in 2025 is 10.7 million.

2025, there was still be 13.35 million people taking the college entrance examination, but what about after 18 years?

The data comes from the OECD’s Education at a Glance 2026, covering 2025 or the latest available year (as early as 2023), combined with population estimates from the UN. China, which is not covered by the OECD data, uses 2020 census figures from the National Bureau of Statistics of China.

---------------

Given someone’s political leanings, this is clearly targeting China.

China has made rapid progress in every aspect in recent years, including education. This should be a widely acknowledged fact around the world.

Yet this 2026 ranking compares China’s 2020 data with more recent data from other countries.

How fair!.......

I would question Bharat's number, considering how easy it is to attain fake degrees.

【First Publicly Announced Proposal】Japan’s Finance Ministry Proposes Cutting the Number of Private Universities by About 40%. Could This Widen Regional Disparities?

■ Are Some University Students Still Learning Basic Addition and Subtraction?

The Ministry of Finance has highlighted 2 major issues. The first is “a decline in the quality of education.”

The ministry cited examples of classes being taught at private universities that are struggling to fill their enrollment quotas.

In mathematics, classes start with basic arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction to teach students the fundamentals of handling numbers. In English, students learn the basics of sentence structures and the verb “to be,” as well as the difference between the present and past tenses. In other words, some classes cover material typically taught in compulsory education.

Reactions: ety
The Kurdish and Arab population of over 20 million living in the east and southeast of Turkiye brings down Turkiye’s standing across every metric.

Most of them are poor and uneducated; each family has 7–8 children, and the children often drop out of school to work in agriculture in many cases

still , 28% is not bad , higher than China , Italy , Brazil , Mexico , India which have major economies
