James Brown arrested 1988

In September 1988, James Brown was arrested after a high-speed, two-state car chase in Georgia and South Carolina, following an incident where he allegedly threatened people with a shotgun at an insurance seminar

He was sentenced to six years in prison, of which he served three, for offenses including failing to stop for police, carrying a deadly weapon, and drug charges.

  • The Incident: On September 24, 1988, Brown allegedly entered an insurance seminar next to his Augusta, Georgia, office with a shotgun and pistol, angry that strangers were using his bathroom.
  • The Chase: Following a report of the incident, Brown led police on a high-speed chase, driving on his rims for several miles after police shot out his tires.
  • Charges and Conviction: Brown was convicted of multiple charges, including aggravated assault and fleeing police. He began his six-year sentence on December 15, 1988.
  • Defense: Brown argued he was acting in fear for his life and later claimed he was harassed by authorities.
  • Release: Despite the six-year sentence, Brown was released from prison in 1991.

1992

Working as a doorman in downtown Detroit, finishing up my degree in accounting, was honored to carry James Brown's brand new bag up to his suite on the 64th floor.

Promoted to midnight bellman that afternoon.

First week on the job was being at James' service after his concert.

James was a real guy, more loved than most realize.

He showed up, not long after he got out of prison. I went up the elevator with him, and six Michigan State Troopers, holding his brand new bag.

Going up the elevator, James turned around. Told me to hand him the bag at the door of his suite.

Glad to play my part. Ended up with a promotion.
