Saudi Arabia purchases 20 NH90 anti-submarine helicopters
Italy will sign a government agreement (G2G) with Saudi Arabia for the sale of about twenty NH90 helicopters in its naval version (NFH). On behalf of Roma, the Italian group Leonardo will sign the contract, French newspaper La Tribune reported.
The newspaper considered this deal a clear defeat for France in the Saudi market. According to identical sources, Riyadh asked the Italian government to sign an agreement to purchase about twenty NH90 helicopters, specifically the naval version NFH (the helicopter designated for frigates within NATO). Therefore, the Italian Leonardo group, and not the NHIndustries consortium responsible for manufacturing the NH90 helicopters, will be the signatory to the contract with Saudi Arabia as the main contractor. It is clear that Saudi Arabia was influenced by the “G to G” model that was signed between Italy and Qatar in 2018 to sell 28 NH90 helicopters (16 of which were the land-based TTH version and 12 were the NFH sea version).
For Italy, this is a distinctive commercial coup in Saudi Arabia, whose markets were monopolized by American, British, and more recently Spanish (Navantia) industrialists. The French newspaper believes that France did not make serious efforts to defend its rights in this field before the Saudi authorities, while the Rafale deal was a priority for France in the Kingdom. During his official visit to the Kingdom, President Emmanuel Macron made time to present the Rafale file with the Saudi Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The NH90 is an 11-ton twin-engine helicopter, equipped with an integrated weapons system and remote aerial controls. It was produced in European cooperation and is intended to renew tactical transport and anti-submarine warfare fleets. Its main tasks include protection of naval fleets with anti-submarine capabilities of frigates, combating maritime terrorism, air transport from land or facilities, as well as escort and rescue missions.
Excellent support for KSA's naval forces. An excellent addition, especially since the company operates the Arab branch in Saudi Arabia under the name Arabian Leonardo.. Most likely there will be local content or partial manufacturing for helicopters in Saudi Arabia.
It has features that are rarely found in its counterparts:
Carrying out anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface ship (ASuW) missions simultaneously.. Thanks to the revolutionary Integrated Mission Management System (IMPS), all sensors and weapons can be operated simultaneously.
20 NH90 helicopter and 10 Romeo MH-60R helicopters.. makes it 30 naval helicopters with capabilities to strike submarines and surface ships..
