Russian EV prototype looks ridiculous, targets 2025 production

BY ADMIN / FRIDAY, 22 DECEMBER 2023 / PUBLISHED IN AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

A new electric vehicle prototype has stepped onto the scene, and it’s shocking. Shockingly ugly. Created by Moscow Polytechnic University, it’s called the Amber and resembles a parrotfish that’s had its face clubbed by a frying pan.
The university did not release specs on the Amber’s range, power or even what kind of charger it uses. According to World Today News, production is scheduled to start in 2025 at an Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. That site once built cars for BMW, Ford, and Hyundai before those companies pulled out of Russia following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
With many high-profile western companies refusing to do business in Russia, as well as foreign government-imposed sanctions, the Amber’s developers have stated this will be a wholly Russian effort. However, as Ukraine Today says, supposedly Russian technology is often made in China.

But let’s get back to the styling for a minute. The Amber’s comically absurd exterior is likely a result of using off-the-shelf parts. As outlets such The Autopian have pointed out, its glass and mirrors have likely been purloined from an existing vehicle. The bug-eyed headlights look like something from AliExpress.
The unnecessarily tall height hides what is likely a not-very-well-integrated battery pack under the cabin floor. What is less explicable are the two portholes on the right side. Perhaps the Amber will have dual charging ports, but their haphazard placement indicates more off-the-shelf components strewn together.
The Amber’s ugliness set off a wave of ridicule across the internet, including a dose of derision from Ukrainian social media users. Comparisons to the Fiat Multipla were probably inevitable. Russian cars built during the Soviet era — Lada, UAZ, VAZ — often sported a homely but utilitarian appearance. In the case of the Amber, it appears that at least some semblance of an attempt was made at design, but that almost makes the resulting misshapenness worse.
To be fair, Avtotor says, as World Today News reports, that the production model will look different from the prototype. Let’s hope so. Five Ambers will be submitted for certification in 2024.

The announcement adds a layer of anticipation to the automotive landscape, offering consumers an expanded choice in the vehicle segment.

Details Still Under Wraps: Characteristics, Pricing, and Launch Dates

While the production start date is on the horizon, specific details about the Moskvich 5, such as its characteristics, pricing, and exact sales launch dates, are yet to be disclosed. The factory’s decision to keep these details under wraps adds an element of intrigue and anticipation among automotive enthusiasts. However, the announcement itself signifies the factory’s progress in realizing its plans and preparedness to introduce the new model to the market.

Moskvich Factory’s Ambitious Plans: Production Targets and Network Expansion

The Moskvich factory’s ambitions extend beyond the Moskvich 5 crossover. With plans to produce around 50,000 cars in 2024, including the recently launched Moskvich-6 sedan, the factory is gearing up for increased production and sales. There is also a strategic focus on expanding the dealership network. The introduction of electric vehicles, such as the Moskvich-3e, aligns with the industry’s shift toward sustainable mobility.

Towards Self-Sustainability: Moscow’s Vision for the Moskvich Factory

A significant aspect of the Moskvich factory’s revival plans involves moving towards self-sustainability. The Moscow authorities envision the factory not only producing finished cars but also manufacturing parts and components. The three-stage development plan over six years aims to position the Moskvich factory as a self-sustainable entity by the next year. With a current network of 82 dealership centers across 51 cities, the factory is making strides towards becoming a formidable player in the Russian automotive landscape.
In conclusion, the announcement of the Moskvich 5 crossover’s production and sales launch signifies a new chapter in the history of the Moskvich car factory. As the factory pursues ambitious production targets, expands its dealership network, and embraces electric vehicles, it is poised to play a crucial role in the future of the Russian automotive industry. The anticipation surrounding the Moskvich 5 adds excitement to the automotive landscape, hinting at a promising future for both the factory and Russian car enthusiasts.

Automobile prices are not expected to increase by the traditional 1-2 percent at the beginning of 2024. Car expert Igor Morzharetto said that car dealers have accumulated large stocks of cars that need to be sold: transmits “Hit the primer”.

“I think there will be no price increase at the beginning of the year. Because in any case, dealers need to sell the cars accumulated in warehouses. There are quite a few. The amount is estimated to be 200 thousand, which is a reasonable figure. They all have to be sold first,” Morzharetto explained.

However, according to the automotive expert, the increase in car prices in Russia is estimated to be due to inflationary growth, but this will not be sharp.

In December 2023, car dealers began discounting and selling 2023 model year vehicles at a discount before the holidays. Chinese crossovers of various brands can be purchased for cash without using credit and barter, even cheaper than the manufacturer price, but with a discount of 200 thousand rubles with additional equipment, said “socialbites.ca”.

The sad retreat of carmakers from Russia

CHO WON-KYEONG
The author is a professor at UNIST and the head of the Global Industry-University Cooperation Center.

Major global automakers are rushing to leave Russia. French automaker Renault sold its Russian subsidiary to the Russian government only for 2 rubles in May last year. Renault had highly relied on the Russian market.

The loss was significant as Renault had focused on the Russian market after acquiring AvtoVAZ, a Russian state-owned carmaker, in 2014. The French carmaker received 9 percent of its EBITA, or earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization, from Russia.

Nissan, a Japanese automaker, also surrendered. In October last year, Nissan sold its Russian corporation and production facilities to the Russian state-run NAMI, the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute. The price was 1 euro, a bit higher than that of Renault.

It is certainly a small amount of money and just a symbolic price. What is the point anyway? This month, Hyundai Motor pulled out of the Russian market after suffering a slump in sales. It was a desperate choice the company made after stopping the local production and export of cars a while ago.

Hyundai’s withdrawal is especially regrettable, as the mass production lines at its second plant in Saint Petersburg were about to begin operation. The factory was sold for 10,000 rubles, higher than Renault and Nissan. Just like the other two carmakers, Hyundai Motor added a “buyback option” within two years after the sale. The possibility of Hyundai re-entering Russia after the Russia-Ukraine War ends remains.

The size of Russia’s automobile market is considerable. Some 1.5 million cars are sold — up to 1.8 million cars if commercial trucks and buses included — are sold there annually. With major global finished car producers nearly withdrawn, the economic impact from political sanctions on Russia is significant. Chinese car brands have ended up replacing the global carmakers in conjunction with Russian capital. After Chinese automakers’ share in the Russian market reached double digits for the first time in 2022, it has continued to grow rapidly.

The prolonged Russia-Ukraine war only enhances the competitiveness of Chinese companies. The year has begun, but the developments in Russia show the bitterness of international political economics.

Dec 20 (Reuters) - Japan's Bridgestone Corp (5108.T), one of the world's top tyremakers, said on Wednesday it had sold its Russian assets to S8 Capital, a Russian holding company that has now scooped up a handful of assets from departing Western firms.
Bridgestone, present in Russia since 1998, decided in March 2022 to suspend all manufacturing activities and freeze new investments in Russia following the Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, a step taken by many other foreign companies.

Tokyo-based Bridgestone, which cited uncertainty and ongoing supply issues when it started looking for a buyer in 2022, said its around 1,000 employees in Russia would transfer to S8 Capital. The deal's price was not disclosed.
"The agreement includes a tyre manufacturing plant in Ulyanovsk and a sales and marketing office in Moscow," Bridgestone said. "The impact of the transfer of its assets to S8 Capital on its consolidated projections for 2023 is to be minor."

Russia represented less than 2% of its revenues, Bridgestone said last year. The deal has received all necessary regulatory approvals, it said.
S8 Capital said the Ulyanovsk factory had production capacity of 2.4 million tyres per year. Adding to its previous purchases of assets formerly owned by tyremakers Continental (CONG.DE) and Cordiant, S8 assets will now have production capacity of more than 15 million tyres annually.

"According to the terms of the deal, Bridgestone's trademarks and brands are not transferred to the new owner," S8 Capital said.
S8 Capital is owned by Russian entrepreneur Armen Sarkisian, and develops IT solutions in finance, retail, and telecommunications.
The company has also acquired assets previously owned by elevator maker Otis Worldwide Corp (OTIS.N) and German technology group Bosch.

2024 Review of Chinese Car Models in Russia: The Oddities and Features of the Best-Selling Vehicles

2024 Review of Chinese Car Models in Russia: The Oddities and Features of the Best-Selling Vehicles

What do you remember about 2023? This is an incredible number of new models, brands and sub-brands that have appeared on the Russian market. More than 20 Chinese cars have passed through my hands alone, and almost every one of them contained some oddities and typically Chinese “chips.” Let’s talk about it and remember the most important points.

Chery Tiggo 4 Pro

My car year began with a test drive of Chery Tiggo 4 Pro. In 2023, it became one of the best-selling cars in Russia. In general, the car is balanced and quite well adapted for our market, but there are some oddities here.
Among them were both typical ones, such as savings on glove compartment lighting or heated seat backs, and more specific ones – inconvenient cup holders, lack of lampshades in the back row and a fuel flap cover that easily freezes at sub-zero temperatures outside.

Changan CS35 Plus New

The next test surprised me with its strange approach to restyling the model. We are talking about an updated version of the crossover with a long name – Changan CS35 Plus New.
On the one hand, the car has become more interesting in terms of technology. A turbo engine and a “robot” appeared, and the dynamics improved noticeably. The appearance has become more modern and aggressive. At the same time, compared to the pre-restyling car, the interior decoration has become simpler, the driver’s seat has lost some of its electric drives. Even such little things as additional hooks and organizer pockets on the backs of the front seats, as well as a microlift for the ceiling handles, have disappeared.
Among other oddities: when you press the physical climate control buttons, a window with information about the temperature and other settings does not pop up automatically, and there is only one button for heating the rear row of seats, that is, the entire sofa is heated, without dividing into the left and right parts.

Changan Uni-K

Another crossover from Changan can easily be called one of the most interesting “Chinese” on the Russian market – this is the Uni-K model. Here you get a cool design, a spacious interior with high-quality finishes and many options. But where would we be without weirdness?
For example, using the climate control touch buttons turned out to be inconvenient, and the climate itself works extremely strangely, which was especially noticeable in winter. There are also sound gags. For example, every time the threshold of 120 km/h is crossed, a sound alert is triggered – this is a tenfold signal that cannot be turned off normally. And if you get out of a running car with the key, after a while the handles close, and to open them you need to press the touch button and listen to the horn sound three times.

Geely Monjaro

Despite the huge number of new products, I would call the Geely Monjaro the best Chinese car in 2023. Design, finishing materials, driving performance – all this corresponds to the level of a good European car. But even here there were some incomprehensible decisions.
Unlike the same Tugella, the themes of the instrument panel of the Monjaro do not change; birds fly on the screen during the day, and the stars shine in the evening. Questions are raised by the logic of controlling the gearbox selector and the drive mode change puck. Moreover, every time you switch these same modes, for some reason a specific sound signal is triggered. It is also surprising that the side walls of the trunk did not receive soft upholstery.

Changan CS85 Coupe и Changan CS95

A couple of large crossovers from Changan were also not without their peculiarities: CS85 Coupe and CS95.
The crossover coupe has a powerful turbo engine and a classic automatic transmission, good dynamics, a stylish red interior and rich equipment. But the car is only available with front-wheel drive, the glossy black panels glare in the sun, the cupholders are small and inconvenient, and the climate control works strangely. The crossover simply does not have the Autohold function, and the trunk shelf does not have holders, meaning it almost always needs to be held with one hand.

The 7-seater CS95 has fewer such moments, but it is not without them at all. The glossy panels here also glare, the climate is not entirely clear, and ergonomics have suffered due to the design of the central tunnel. The wireless charging pad is poorly located. The cup holders have been hit again: two large glasses of coffee will “conflict” with each other. There is an Autohold function, but for some reason there is no separate indicator of its operation on the instrument panel, only a small pop-up window. There are no standard seat heaters, and the dealer’s solution turned out to be unsuccessful: when the driver or passenger gets into the car, part of the side support of the seat is pressed, which is why the heating buttons are often pressed accidentally. You have to turn them off on the go and by touch.

Jetour Dashing

Today, a similar trend can be seen among various Chinese cars – ordinary gasoline cars are made to look like electric cars both outside and inside. One of the striking examples: the Jetour Dashing crossover.
It has a very impressive appearance and an equally unusual interior, especially in the maximum configuration. There is a flattened oval steering wheel, a minimum of physical buttons, a narrow instrument panel and a huge multimedia system tablet. This very screen contains control of all functions, from adjusting mirrors and heated seats to activating the trunk servo drive. Is it convenient? For me, not very much, although you can get used to everything, especially when you like the car. On the move, the Dashing turned out to be generally pleasant, but the “robot” still requires tuning; in the city it lacks smoothness in any of the driving modes.

Changan Lamore

The hero of our last test in 2023 was made in a similar style. The Changan Lamore sedan received a stylish design with fold-out door handles in the style of a Tesla, a huge frameless radiator grille and exhaust pipes hidden under the bumper. The interior features an oval steering wheel, even more flattened than in the Dashing, a large vertical media system tablet and an unusual instrument panel. But all this beauty comes at the price of practicality.
The inner part of the steering wheel is made convex, so that when rotating its outermost buttons are often pressed accidentally. The themes on the dashboard do not change, and not everyone will like the constant flickering of painted road markings. The car received a bunch of advanced options, including gesture control and driver condition monitoring, but among the “warm” options is only heating of one driver’s seat. The climate control also works strangely, and the proprietary signal does not turn off normally when crossing the threshold of 120 km/h. But, even despite all these oddities, in terms of driving performance, the Lamore can be set as an example for most Chinese cars, which we will discuss in detail in the review, which will be published on the website in January 2024.

Lynk & Co 09

The crossover from the premium sub-brand Geely turned out to be the most balanced and pleasant to drive of all the Chinese cars I tested. The only strange thing that can be noted here is that at the time of shooting there was no Russian language in the menu, and it was also impossible to mirror the image from a smartphone. But they promised to fix this with future firmware. “Zero Nine” turned out to be the most expensive car I tested in 2023, but this model is not officially supplied to the Russian market, although the dealer gives a two-year warranty.

***

As you can see, there are plenty of oddities and incomprehensible “tricks” in Chinese cars, and this does not depend much on the price or brand. Among the most common issues are incorrect operation of climate control, problems with ergonomics (chairs, cup holders, filling of the central tunnel), settings of robotic boxes, lack of a good translation into Russian and an abundance of sound signals and notifications. For example, the last point applies to almost all models from the Chery concern: when you get out of a running car with the key in your pocket, a beep sounds (three or six times). In courtyards, this function is especially pleasing, and it cannot be disabled normally.
Of course, these are not all the oddities and features that are found in Chinese cars. Here we have shared the main moments that were memorable in the past year. You can find out more information about the models you are interested in in our articles and video reviews. And in 2024, we will continue to study the features of new Chinese cars and share all the details with you. Judging by the plans of Chinese companies, we will definitely not have a shortage of new products.

Half of car purchases in Russia are status-driven, survey finds

by Nik Flegont | Jan 2, 2024 | Automotive
More than half (52%) of Russians believe their choice of car is determined by their profession and status level, a survey conducted by car vertical Auto.ru and job board HeadHunter has found.
According to the survey, the most conscientious about demonstrating their status by the car they drive are sales and customer service reps, as well as marketing, advertising and PR professionals, closely followed by upper and middle managers.
The survey highlights differences in preferences regarding car characteristics between various professions: HR specialists pay attention to engine size, while those in the IT and advertising sectors are more likely to value design. The survey also found that those in the advertising industry were less interested in safety features.
In terms of marques, IT specialists preferred Subaru, Volvo and Geely; transportation and logistics professionals favored Opel, Audi, Lexus and Toyota; bankers Haval, Kia and Porsche; scientists and educators Land Rover, Suzuki and Mercedes Benz.
The highest level of interest in electric vehicles was displayed by sales and customer reps (52% of respondents in this category), upper and middle managers (44%) and IT specialists (43%).
Auto.ru is the leading car vertical in Russia, while HeadHunter (hh.ru) is the country’s leading job board.
