Hyundai Sells Russian Factory For Just Over $100

The company's main factory in Russia has the capacity to build over 200,000 units per year

Hyundai Sells Russian Factory For Just Over $100

Hyundai is the latest company to sell its factory in Russia, with the carmaker ditching the plant for a nominal 10,000 rubles, the equivalent of just $111 at current rates.

Russian firm Art-Finance has purchased the assets and the sale includes a clause where Hyundai can buy back the factory within two years of the sale. The deal was approved in a board meeting earlier this week and has also received the go-ahead from Russia’s government commission on foreign asset sales.
Hyundai has said it will take a 287 billion won ($219.19 million) loss and plans to complete the deal by December 28.

Operations at the St. Petersburg plant were suspended in March 2022 following the invasion of Russia in Ukraine. The site has an annual capacity of over 200,000 units and has been responsible for building the Hyundai Solaris, Hyundai Creta, Kia Rio, and Kia Rio X-Line.

The carmaker has been hit hard by dwindling sales across the country. Together with Kia, they were among the top three selling brands in Russia before the war. The Korea Times notes that it sold just six new vehicles in August this year, a dramatic decrease from the 2,892 units sold a year earlier. Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 400,000 vehicles in Russia in 2019, and as of 2021, the two brands had a 22.5% share of Russia’s total vehicle market.

A number of other major Western automakers have sold their local operations in Russia for nominal fees over the past 18 months. In October last year, Nissan sold its local facilities to Russia’s Central Research and Development Automobile and Engine Institute for just €1, meaning it lost 100 billion yen ($687 million). Like Hyundai’s deal, it has the option to buy back the operations within the next six years.

Moscow Polytechnic University unveiled the prototype of the Russian electric car Amber on Dec. 18, sarcastically dubbed the "Tesla Killer" on social media.
Its development was reportedly commissioned by the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, known for producing cars from BMW, Ford, KIA, and Hyundai until Western sanctions prompted a shift to this new venture.

The plant will have to settle for this "monster" now.

While the introduction of this electric car horrified many Russian citizens, most users saw it as an opportunity to mock the long-suffering Russian automotive industry.

Amber stands out not just for its design but also for claims that its engine, inverter, control boards, and batteries will be of Russian origin.
Therefore, discussing the quality of this product is unwarranted, even if most of its components, as is often the case in the Russian Federation, turn out to be Chinese.

They talked about the real level of localization of Lada cars at AvtoVAZ

Anika

January 12, 2024

The level of localization of modern Lada cars depends on the specific model. In this respect report “Autonews of the day”, referring to the company’s president, Maxim Sokolov.
According to him, the Granta and Niva models have reached almost complete technological dominance and the level of localization is 99 percent. Vesta’s localization rate is 95% and the company is working to approach 100%.
Speaking about the degree of localization of Lada Largus, the production of which is planned to restart at the plant in Izhevsk in May, the head of AvtoVAZ noted that “the situation is constantly and rapidly improving.”
It happened before that knownThat AvtoVAZ does not exclude the possibility of releasing even more simplified versions of Lada Granta if there is demand. According to Sokolov, everything depends on demand. Lada Granta cars are used not only in cities, but also in rural areas, where simplified configurations are especially in demand. If a buyer is ready to give up conventional electric power steering in order to buy a car for 10 thousand rubles cheaper, AvtoVAZ is ready to give him this opportunity.

What about posting news about foreign cars entering the Russian market?

Chinese companies have divided the Russian automobile market among themselves. What will happen next Autoexpert Moseev: Chinese cars will become cheaper in the next three months

Anika
ByANIKA
January 12, 2024

Last year, the Russian automobile market grew by 58%, taking into account the supply of automobiles through parallel import channels. This is evidenced by statistics of the Committee of Automobile Manufacturers of the Association of European Businesses (AEB) in the Russian Federation. Manufacturers and importers increased their sales by 36 percent compared to 2022, the worst year of the automobile market in the last 10 years.

According to the data received by the AEB Committee by obtaining application forms from manufacturers and official importers, 937 thousand new passenger and light commercial vehicles were sold in Russia in 2023. JSC “Passport Industrial Consulting” has other data – they are based on certificates of registration of cars with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate – 1.13 million units.

Who swims in gold

At the end of the year, the leader among automobile companies was the domestic AvtoVAZ.It sold 352.5 thousand cars, which means an 87% increase compared to the previous year. It is followed by Chinese Haval and Chery with sales of 119 and 118 thousand cars, respectively. Haval sales increased more than 3.5 times compared to 2022. The Chery brand recorded a threefold increase.

In fourth place is the Geely brand, which shipped 84 thousand cars to Russian customers last year, compared to 24.4 thousand in 2022. It is followed by domestic GAZ with 56 thousand light commercial vehicles (33% increase on an annual basis).
Taking into account the sub-brands Exeed, Omoda and Jaecoo, according to market results, the Chery concern took second place in terms of sales volumes, right behind AvtoVAZ.
Total sales of the brands of this Chinese automobile giant reached 210.4 thousand cars. Another 138.5 thousand vehicles were sold under Great Wall Corporation’s Haval, Tank, GWM and Ora brands.

Best sellers

At the end of 2023, the ten most popular passenger cars in Russia included three Ladas and seven models of Chinese brands. Among the 25 best-selling cars, the Chinese have 21 cars.
According to the 12-month results, Granta and Niva took the first two places with 206.1 thousand cars and 90.2 thousand cars, respectively. This is followed by Haval Jolion (58.2 thousand cars) and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro (52.6 thousand cars).

Haval

Domestic Lada Vesta took fifth place. UAZ Patriot SUV was in 17th place.

The result is beyond expectations

The results for 2023 exceeded experts’ expectations. At the beginning of this year, the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee guessNo more than 770 thousand cars will be sold in Russia, the actual result exceeded 1.1 million. The 2024 forecast will reach 1.3 million cars with an increase of 15 percent.
According to Oleg Moseev, founder of the Automarketer project, in reality the result may be higher:
“We can say that the outcome of 2023 is good, with the high prices continuing throughout the year, increasing borrowing costs and the decrease in parallel imports in the fourth quarter. It is clear that there will be a slight increase in 2024; “Car availability is higher, with sedans appearing that were in short supply last year.”
He added that negative factors include the low exchange rate of the ruble and high loan interest rates, which will not fall before the second half of the year.

Chinese cars will become cheaper

Due to the excess of Chinese cars imported to Russia and the increase in the cost of credit due to the Central Bank’s interest rate increase, prices will have to be reduced in the near future, which will be good news for customers, but bad for dealers. In addition, Moseev continues that Chinese automobile companies are preparing extremely ambitious plans for the Russian market for 2024.
“Chinese brands will have to fight for the consumer primarily through pricing policy. There is no longer a shortage and prices will need to be reduced or plans reduced to increase sales. And if you add up all the plans of Chinese automakers for 2024, it turns out that they want to sell 1.3 million cars,” explains the expert.
Moseev believes that we should expect discounts on these cars from dealers in the first quarter of next year, and if there is no significant increase in the exchange rate in the second quarter, we will see price adjustments on the part of distributors.
“The price of Chinese cars already included high margins and now they can sacrifice some of that. Dealers and automakers already offer discounts, except for domestic discounts, which have a different status, said Igor Morzharetto, partner of the analytical agency Autostat.
He adds that there is no room for increasing prices: dealers of Chinese brands already have 200 thousand unsold cars that need to be sold. According to their estimates, 1.2-1.3 million new passenger cars will be sold in Russia in 2024, taking into account the need to renew the fleet.

In 2023, new car sales in Russia exceeded 1.1 million. In terms of sales volume, Chinese brands Haval, Chery and Geely were only ahead of the domestic Lada. Chinese automobile companies have prepared extremely ambitious plans for the Russian market for 2024, but experts believe that despite the growth of the Russian automobile market, Chinese brands will have to fight for consumers.

Deputy of the First Duma on the loss of Lada Vesta: There are absolutely no safe cars in nature

Anika
ByANIKA
January 12, 2024

State Duma deputy Oleg Leonov told socialbites.ca that Oztorozhno had not heard of the first accident involving a Lada Vesta from the State Duma fleet, which a source from the media publication reported. Leonov stated that he would continue to use Lada company vehicles because “no one is insured against traffic accidents.” AvtoVAZ did not comment on the issue.

“No, nothing is known about this accident. I will definitely continue [пользоваться], Definitely. Because every car crashes. No one is insured against traffic accidents, and there are no absolutely safe cars in principle, there are no such cars in nature. I can’t evaluate its features because I don’t know. “I believe that it is definitely not a dangerous vehicle,” he said.

According to Beware Media source, as a result of the accident, the domestic car “folded into an accordion shape.” Deputy Leonov believes that the car should be “crumpled” – this is how the passive security system works.

“As of my primary education, I am a road traffic organization and safety engineer, so [знаю] – If the front and back of a car fold into an accordion to a certain degree, that’s very good. This means that the vehicle’s passive safety systems are working properly. It must be wrinkled. If the car doesn’t crash, that’s extremely bad. This means that the shock cannot be absorbed and people inside are in danger. However, when the front of the car is crushed like an accordion, the impact energy is absorbed in this way, thus reducing the burden on people,” he explained.

Another State Duma deputy, Denis Parfenov, told socialbites.ca that he was also unaware of the accident. In his opinion, the main role is played not by the vehicle itself, but by the driver’s driving skills and general road safety.

“I don’t care what the difference is, Ford and Hyundai can also crash, so it seems to me that the question here is primarily about the driving skill of the driver and general safety on the roads. Vesta or not Vesta – in my opinion, it is not critical in general. I am not a car expert, this “I do not assume the role of expert on these issues. Yes, traditionally it is accepted that the safety record of the domestic automobile industry is probably not as good as it could be. But this is a matter of evolution. If we consciously develop our own industry, I think we will catch up here too,” he said.

A representative of AvtoVAZ in a conversation with socialbites.ca did not comment on the publication about the accident.

“No comment,” the company said.

On January 12, the publication “Attention, Media”, citing a source in the State Duma, reported that the first serious accident involving the Duma Lada Vesta car occurred in Moscow, as a result of which the car crashed into the accordion. The car was hit from behind by another car, the front part of the Vesta “got under” the Gazelle. The publication’s source in the State Duma called the car “unsafe” and noted that “many people became nervous” after the incident.

Former member of parliament saidThat the State Duma garage will consist “almost entirely” of domestic cars.
