they could have been enjoying advantages of their geographical position as middleman between russia and europe without ambitions to lean towards west decisively but obviously that their society did not have that kind of maturity, clarity and vision.
you can not subvert society if there is no critical mass of willing participants even for USA.
it is way before in past, ukrainians as collective never accepted domination of russians over them, which is fine but that blurred their ability to be realistic in political and geopolitical spectrum.
i did not say that there is not but you can not conduct this brutal war if there is not enough people who are against russia by different reasons.
