so who's winning?

Neither are if you base it on territory alone. But Russia failed in its strategic objectives of overthrowing Z, installing a puppet, and militarily controlling the country. This war is a Pyrrhic victory at best for Russia, due to the enormous losses in manpower, equipment, and the degradation of it’s economy.

Putin only continues the war due to the huge losses and financial toll they’ve expended in Ukraine. Thats the latest US intelligence assessment you can read below. It’s classic sunk cost fallacy.

In this section of the PDF, Ukraine is clearly mentioned.

Ukraine has won in the sense they’ve defeated Russias core objectives. It’s unlikely they can achieve an outright military victory, and the same can be said for Russia. While Russia has gained territory, it’s not enough to justify the human, financial, and economic toll it’s taken on Russia. They’ve also suffered multiple strategic setbacks in the Middle East as a result of the war.

So this is a classic case of Pyrrhic victory
