Russia has gained massive military experience and developed modern military hardware and tactics. This conflict has been a boon for Russia.

Russia has lost alot, but that's not the point

Countries post war tend to become VERY strong, unless they are destroyed and Russia itself is fine and has minimal damage

It's industry has been orientated towards the military effort, at the moment that equipment and missiles and tanks etc are all being used on the front

As soon as their is a ceasefire or peace, agreement etc then Russian will continue to churn out MASSIVE AMOUNTS of drones, missiles, tanks and jets etc for many years but they will not be used because the war is finished and within 1-5 years Russia will emerge as a absolute BRUTE of a state armed to the teeth, having learnt multiple lessons from the war

None of this is good for the west and Russian enmity towards the west will be renewed

Remember when Zelensky in an interview early in the war said that there are some who want to prolong the war to weaken Russia, even at the expense of the destruction of Ukraine. And then he followed their lead anyway, eyes wide open. I can't imagine a greater self serving coward than he.

Pokrovsk used to be one of those places.

"It's crazy," he says as we head for the city, "because this used to be the haven, the safest city in the region and the biggest hospital. The evacuation train was departing from Pokrovsk."

If and when Russian forces take the city, it will deprive the Ukrainian military of a key supply and transport hub.

Ukraine has already lost the output from a crucial coal mine in the area – the only one producing coking coal for its steel industry. Operations were suspended last month because of the Russian advance.

Data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows that Russia has gained almost six times as much territory in 2024 as it did in 2023, and is advancing towards key Ukrainian logistical hubs in the eastern Donbas region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's surprise incursion into Russia's Kursk region is faltering. Russian troops have pushed Kyiv's offensive backwards. Experts have questioned the success of the offensive, with one calling it a "strategic catastrophe" given manpower shortages faced by Ukraine.

The Kursk incursion was initially a major boon for Ukraine in terms of morale at a time of serious setbacks, and the audacity of the operation was a reminder of its ability to surprise and harm its enemy.

But Dr Miron said while the Kursk incursion was a moment of “tactical brilliance” it has also been a “strategic catastrophe” for Ukraine.

“The whole idea was to maybe gain some political leverage in potential negotiations, but militarily to draw the Russian forces away from the Donbas in order to liberate Kursk. And what we're seeing instead is that Ukrainian units are tied down there.”

Some of Kyiv’s most experienced and effective units are known to be fighting in Kursk. Mechanised units equipped with state-of-the-art Western armour are also involved in the offensive.

“What they're controlling right now, it does give them a certain advantage,” she said. “If it came to negotiations, I'm sure that as the Russian side has been stressing, ‘we will do it based on the battlefield configuration’.

“From a Russian perspective, they have much better cards than the Ukrainians.”

A dire shortage of infantry troops and supply routes coming under Russian drone attacks are conspiring against Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk, where decisive battles in the nearly three-year war are playing out — and time is running short.

Ukrainian troops are losing ground around the crucial supply hub, which lies at the confluence of multiple highways leading to key cities in the eastern Donetsk region as well as an important railway station.

Russian forces now occupy key dominant heights around the Pokrovsk region, which allows them to use drones up to 30 kilometers (18 miles) deep into Ukrainian front lines.

Ukrainian soldiers in Pokrovsk said shortages of fighting troops are “catastrophic” and challenges are compounded by newly created infantry units that are poorly trained and inexperienced, putting more pressure on battle-hardened brigades having to step in to stabilize the front line.

His battalion has almost no reserves, forcing infantry units to hold front-line positions for weeks at a time. For every one of his soldiers, Russians have 20, he said, emphasizing how outnumbered they are.
