Sanctions reimposed on Iran 10 years after landmark nuclear deal

That's beside the point. Trump is a moghul. Other than raw power over his countrymen, what else could he want that he doesn't have already?

Even if there's no incorruptible leader, Trump of all people has no reason to be corrupt.

Trump is smarter than most people give him credit for. As for the rest of your post, its pointless and off-topic.

Non-Aligned Movement backs Iran against US-E3 sanctions

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on 16 October that the final communiqué of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) ministerial meeting explicitly supports Iran’s stance on the snapback mechanism at the UN Security Council.

NAM brings together developing and post-colonial nations that have chosen not to align formally with any major power bloc.

Today, the movement counts 120 member states, along with several observer countries and international organizations that take part in its meetings.

Speaking to IRIB News on the sidelines of the NAM summit in Kampala, capital of Uganda, Araghchi said the final document reflected several key Iranian proposals, including a clause of “exceptional importance” declaring NAM’s support for Tehran regarding the snapback issue.

He stated that “the Non-Aligned Movement expressed its support for the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the snapback issue at the UN Security Council, emphasizing that Resolution 2231 remains valid and that its provisions and timelines must be fully observed.”

According to the foreign minister, the resolution’s Paragraph 8 “stipulates that the resolution should terminate on 18 October (26 Mehr) as scheduled,” a position aligned with Iran, Russia, China, and several other states opposing the claims of the US and European countries about reactivating the mechanism.

Araghchi said the NAM statement further condemned “in the strongest terms” the attacks carried out by Israel and the US against Iran, describing them as “unacceptable and condemnable.”

These additions, he said, reaffirmed the solidarity of NAM member states with Iran.

He also announced the inclusion of a clause condemning assaults on Iran’s nuclear facilities and a separate paragraph denouncing the Israeli 2024 pager and walkie-talkie terrorist attacks in Lebanon that targeted thousands of civilians.

In his remarks, Araghchi highlighted that “more than 100 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement supported the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” calling it a “major diplomatic achievement.”

The 2231 rift: How Iran’s defiance exposes the deep divide in the global order

On 18 October 2025, the date that was supposed to mark the formal end of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the very mechanism that anchored the Iran nuclear deal, the world instead has witnessed the widening of a profound geopolitical divide. What should have been a technical expiry of restrictions has turned into a political confrontation that underscores the erosion of Western authority and the rise of a multipolar order.

According to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Resolution 2231 was set to lapse on this date, effectively lifting the last vestiges of UN sanctions architecture against Iran. Yet, instead of closure, the United States and its European allies the so-called E3 have moved to unilaterally extend the restrictions, invoking the “snapback” mechanism that was meant to be dormant. Iran, backed by Russia, China, and more than 120 countries of the Non-Aligned Movement, has categorically rejected the legitimacy of this move.

In a joint letter sent this week to the UN Secretary-General, Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing announced that they “do not recognise the validity of any unilateral extension” of Resolution 2231, framing it as a violation of international law and an abuse of multilateral institutions. For Iran, this is more than a legal argument it is a political declaration that the era of Western monopoly over global norms is ending.

What makes this moment historically significant is not merely the defiance itself, but the chorus of support Iran now finds across the Global South. During the recent meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, 120 nations collectively declared that they “do not recognise any continued enforcement of UNSCR 2231,” aligning their position with Tehran’s. Such a collective stance would have been unthinkable a decade ago, when US sanctions held near-universal weight. Now, however, the world’s emerging economies from Latin America to South Asia increasingly see these Western-led enforcement tools as outdated relics of a unipolar past.

This episode reflects a much broader structural transformation: the fragmentation of the post-1945 international order. The United States and its allies are struggling to maintain control over the institutions they built, while new powers particularly in the East and Global South are asserting a new legitimacy rooted in pluralism, sovereignty, and non-intervention. Iran’s challenge to Resolution 2231, then, becomes emblematic of a wider revolt against Western legalism.

For Tehran, the timing could not be more strategic. After the temporary ceasefire in Gaza and Iran’s deliberate absence from the Sharm el-Sheikh conference which Tehran dismissed as a “political theatre” aimed at legitimising Western mediation the Islamic Republic has shifted its focus toward consolidating ties with Russia and China. The presence of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in Moscow this week underscores that the message Tehran is sending is not merely diplomatic but security-oriented: Iran’s strategic future lies with the East.

This reorientation comes amid the growing appeal of alternative institutions such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, where Iran sees frameworks free from Western conditionality. Tehran’s long-term vision as articulated in its strategic cooperation agreements with both Beijing and Moscow is to create parallel financial and security architectures capable of resisting Western sanctions and political coercion.

The Non-Aligned Movement’s stance reinforces this trajectory. For the first time in decades, a collective bloc representing the majority of the world’s population is openly defying the US-European interpretation of international law. This, in turn, accelerates the polarisation of global governance between two competing systems: one rooted in Western-dominated institutions, and another emerging around the Eurasian and Global South nexus.

From a geopolitical standpoint, this split mirrors the global redistribution of power following years of economic decoupling and technological rivalry. The sanctions once seen as the hallmark of Western power have lost their deterrent effect. Iran, once isolated, now finds itself part of a growing coalition of sanctioned or disillusioned states including Russia, China, and several members of BRICS that are collectively rewriting the rules of engagement.

At the heart of this transformation is a simple reality: legitimacy is shifting from coercion to cooperation. The West continues to rely on punitive tools embargoes, exclusion, and conditionality while the Global South increasingly organises around inclusivity and mutual recognition. In this context, Iran’s resistance to the extension of Resolution 2231 becomes symbolic of a deeper moral struggle: a refusal to accept that legality is defined solely by those who wield the most power.

The geopolitical implications extend far beyond Iran’s nuclear dossier. If 120 countries can reject a UN resolution backed by the West, it signals a legitimacy crisis for the very institutions meant to uphold global order. The UN Security Council, once a stage for consensus, risks becoming a forum for division. In that sense, the “snapback” controversy is not just about Iran’s rights it is about the future of multilateralism itself.

For Western powers, the move to reimpose restrictions may provide short-term political cover, but it comes at a long-term strategic cost. Each unilateral action erodes the credibility of the system they claim to defend. For Iran and its partners, this erosion is not a crisis but an opportunity a chance to redefine global governance on more equitable and multipolar terms.

As the dust settles after 18 October, one thing is clear: Resolution 2231 no longer represents consensus but contestation. And in that contest, Iran has managed to turn what was once a symbol of its isolation into a platform for global realignment.

Iran, Russia, China send letter to UN declaring nuclear deal with Tehran terminated

Countries criticized UK, France, Germany for ‘legally and procedurally flawed’ attempt to trigger ‘snapback mechanism’

Iran, Russia, and China sent a letter Saturday to the UN secretary-general and the Security Council, declaring that the nuclear deal with Tehran has been terminated, effectively ending the Council's consideration of the Iranian nuclear issue.

The three countries criticized the UK, France, and Germany, known as the E3, for what they described as a “legally and procedurally flawed” attempt to trigger the snapback mechanism to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran under UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

“The attempt by the E3 to trigger the so-called ‘snapback’ is by default legally and procedurally flawed,” said the letter, adding that the European parties, “having themselves ceased to perform their commitments under both the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ) and Resolution 2231, lack the standing to invoke its provisions.”

The letter reaffirmed that “in accordance with operative paragraph 8 of Resolution 2231, all its provisions are terminated after Oct. 18, 2025,” stressing that “the full and timely conclusion of Resolution 2231 marks the end of the Security Council’s consideration of the Iranian nuclear issue and contributes to strengthening the authority of the Council and the credibility of multilateral diplomacy.”

Iran, Russia and China also urged all parties to stay committed to “finding a political settlement that accommodates the concerns of all parties through diplomatic engagement and dialogue based on mutual respect” and to refrain from unilateral sanctions, threats of force or any action that could escalate the situation.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry statement said earlier that the resolution, which allowed the reimposition of UN sanctions on Tehran, “has officially expired in line with the predetermined timeline.”

The 10-year period defined by Resolution 2231, adopted July 20, 2015, “ends today, Oct. 18,” and that “all provisions, restrictions, and mechanisms related to Iran’s nuclear program are terminated as of this date,” it added.

The E3 announced Aug. 28, the activation of the “snapback” mechanism under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), accusing Iran of violating its commitments, a move that followed the US’ unilateral withdrawal from the agreement.

We should have never signed JCPOA garbage in the first place. Why sign it while knowing that these European jackals the so called E3 follow US orders like a pack of loyal dogs?

It was only a chance for west to prepare and then launch an attack on Iran economically, politically and militarily.

Nuclear program was a closed punch, it kept west guessing. When JCPOA opened that punch, west got assured that the program is naturally harmless and peaceful hence vulnerable to military attacks. There is and was no honesty in western camp.

Libya? Syria?

Syria was thrown into sedition after they packed their chemical weapons and sent them away making Israel feel comfort. Libya in a similar manner destroyed its nuclear and missile programs. We had these examples and yet we trusted and voted for someone like Zarif and Rouhani. Two dumbfucks educated and raised in the west.

If Iran is still on its feet is not because of lame negotiations but the internal strength of the country which is based on nationwide democracy.

For sure, Iranian leadership will not allow west to take the advantage of flaws in democracy. People are aware of their sedition.

NAM has always been a great chance for standing up to the international bullies esp western bullies. Free nations around the world have to use this incredible chance.

Trump is already busy with destroying the so called allies' economies. He calls Arab kinglets the money bags. So, west is not the whole world and there are other chances and opportunities to be discovered for a multi polar world.

The west wants regime change, they will make every single excuse in the book. Iranians must stick together, defend their country, build economy and military to survive. Iran also needs reforms, become a modern Islamic state, keep the people happy.

If Rohani sits at SL seat post Khamenei, expect more cuckoldry. Khamenei favors Russia for his fetishes but Rohani+Zarif Mafia are on American payroll from the beginning. Khamenei used them to prolong the regime expiry date, just like Pexeshkian+Araghchi are brought in to cut a deal with the west.

It will be funny seeing a tight match between Rohani's IRI vs Reza Pahlavi "online" opposition in proving who is the biggest pup of west.

A genuine question, what does the people in Iran sees Rohani and Nejad?

Read your own comment again and analyze the stupid parts by yourself. How on earth is that possible Rouhani becomes leader of revolution?

Leader of Iran uses Zarif and Rouhani to prolong the expiry date? WTF? Are you living on the moon or pretending of being an absolute idiot? Do you know what the word 'vote' means?

Its easy to accuse everyone around and live in fool's paradise and ignore the reality.
