Saudi Arabia strategic Projects: news, discussions & updates

In a new scientific achievement, Fajr Al-Khulaifi, a mechanical engineering student at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, was able to invent a device that extracts energy from raindrops.

Al-Khulaifi explained the idea of the device and its working mechanism in her interview with “Akhbar 24”, on the sidelines of the Semiconductor Future Forum, which was held in Riyadh the past two days. She also touched on the journey of her research and scientific journey.

She said that she began her journey with the talent research program and then registered in the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, to meet her supervisor, who explained to her the field of semiconductors and how to develop businesses and projects in it.

Al-Khulaifi went on to say that while she was on her way to meet her supervising doctor, rain fell in Riyadh. This was in the seventh month of the year and in the summer time, which surprised her. After learning that this rain came after the rain seeding program recently implemented in the Kingdom, she thought about... How to invest this rain and benefit from it.

This rain led her to the idea of designing a device that responds to raindrops, she said, as she worked with her supervisor to design the device according to the latest scientific procedures, so she later added it to her trip with the International ISEF Exhibition, and used a material that made her innovation extract energy from the sun’s rays. From raindrops and temperatures.

Al-Khulaifi worked to make the device flexible and work at all times of the year, as it produces energy in sunny, hot and rainy times, meaning it can be used in all countries of the world.

Al-Khulaifi concluded her speech by saying that after this effort she made, she won third place globally in the field of energy at the ISEF exhibition in 2023.
