Saudi-Turkish agreement to develop and implement 5,000 MW solar energy projects in Türkiye

@AlArabiya_Brk

The agreement includes the development and implementation of solar energy station projects in the Republic of Türkiye, with a total installed capacity of up to 5,000 MW, in two phases.

The first phase: two solar energy projects, in Sivas and Kerman, with a total capacity of 2,000 MW.
The second phase: Other projects implemented according to the frameworks agreed upon between the two parties, with an additional capacity of 3,000 megawatts.

The first phase projects offer very competitive prices for selling electricity, compared to other renewable energy plants in Türkiye. Moreover, these stations, with investments worth approximately two billion US dollars, will provide more than two million Turkish families with electricity.

A state-owned Turkish company will purchase the electricity generated from these plants for a period of thirty years, and during the implementation of the projects, the maximum use of equipment and services will be made locally.

The World Defense Exhibition consolidates Saudi Arabia's ambition to localize military industries and transform into a global defense center

1771271099456.png
Saudi Arabia's growing defense partnerships and accelerating efforts to localize military industries indicate its ambition to become a regional and global center for military manufacturing and advanced defense technologies.

Saudi Arabia concluded the third edition of the World Defense Exhibition by signing 60 military and defense contracts worth more than 33 billion Saudi riyals (about 8.8 billion dollars), in clear confirmation of the Kingdom’s intention to diversify arms suppliers and accelerate the construction of a local defense industry, in light of the escalating state of regional instability.

The five-day exhibition was held, organized by the General Authority for Military Industries, under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, under the supervision of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and inaugurated by the Minister of Defense Khalid bin Salman, and witnessed unprecedented international participation.

During a press conference in Malham, north of Riyadh, the Authority’s Governor, Ahmed Al-Ohali, described the 2026 edition as the result of two years of coordinated work between government agencies and the private sector, considering it a turning point in the history of the defense industries sector in the Kingdom.

Al-Ohali said that the results of the World Defense Expo 2026 reflect the continued progress achieved by Saudi Arabia in building a competitive national military industries sector, pointing to the agreements and partnerships that were signed during the event.

Record participation and major contracts

This year's edition saw the participation of 1,486 exhibitors from 89 countries, along with 513 official delegations representing 121 governments. The number of visitors reached 137,000, while the exhibition area expanded by 58% compared to the previous edition, to exceed 272,000 square meters distributed over four halls.

73 memorandums of understanding and 220 agreements were signed, including 93 government agreements and 127 agreements between companies.

The exhibition included one of the largest aviation and static displays in the region, with the participation of 63 static aircraft and 25 aircraft in live air shows, including F-15, F-16, F-35 and Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. About 700 military pieces and equipment were displayed, in addition to naval platforms, unmanned systems, and live land shows.

The exhibition's CEO, Andrew Percy, said that the event demonstrated Saudi Arabia's ability to bring together the global defense community, facilitate technology transfer, and build industrial partnerships. The program included 355 live performances and 70 intellectual sessions in three theatres, with the participation of 151 speakers who addressed developments in air, land, sea and space defense and multi-domain integration.

Orientation towards diversification and localization

The exhibition comes amid what Saudi authorities describe as an unprecedented phase of tension in the Middle East, where ongoing conflicts and escalating regional rivalries are pushing Gulf states to accelerate programs to modernize their armed forces.

Riyadh asserts that its defense policy is of a deterrent nature and not an offensive one, but the volume of purchases and partnerships reflects the increasing focus on military readiness and protecting national interests, especially in the face of threats such as ballistic missiles, drones, and unconventional attacks.

The localization of defense spending within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030 is a fundamental focus of this strategy. Al-Awhali explained that the Kingdom achieved a “historic leap” in local military production, as the rate of nationalization increased from 4% in 2018 to 25% by the end of 2024, i.e. four times in eight years.

The number of workers in the sector also increased from 25,000 in 2020 to 34,000, of whom Saudis constitute 63%. In the long term, the Kingdom aims to localize more than 50% of defense spending by 2030, reducing dependence on imports and promoting the building of an integrated national industrial base.

Al-Ohali pointed out that the sector has moved from almost complete dependence on foreign suppliers to laying the foundations of a sustainable and technologically advanced system, based on partnerships, strong supply chains, and the development of national competencies.

Strategic positioning

Regulators presented the broad international participation, including the presence of major global defense companies, as evidence of growing confidence in Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner and attractive destination for defense investment.

Preparation for the 2028 edition has already begun, as organizers seek to establish the exhibition as not just a commercial event, but rather a strategic platform that contributes to shaping the future of integrated defense systems.

As regional uncertainty continues, the growing defense partnerships and localization efforts reflect Saudi Arabia’s ambition to transform not only into one of the largest arms importers, but also into a regional and global center for military manufacturing and advanced defense technologies.

With Saudi hands and young engineering minds

Noura Al-Saabi and Latifa Al-Rashid present "Bariq," the first locally manufactured system to counter spying drones using green laser technology.

When engineering meets security awareness and national ambition, innovations are born that protect the skies and shape the future.

"Bariq" — an intelligent system to counter hostile spying drones on military facilities, and it is the first system manufactured in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that relies on green laser technology to deter unmanned aerial threats, giving it a qualitative technological advantage in the field of defense and protection.

Two electrical engineering students did not wait for graduation to start making an impact, but rather turned their classroom seats into a real innovation lab that serves the nation's security and its vital facilities.

An innovation that carries its meaning in its name — Bariq — a light that dazzles the eyes of threats before they approach, and reflects the capability of young Saudi talents to compete in defense technology sectors that have long been the domain of major industrial nations.

A Saudi Mind Redefines Cochlear Implant Design Standards Worldwide

r. Israa Ali Al-Jaziri, founder of the Cochlear Implant Center in Al-Ahsa, becomes the first Saudi to invent a completely new concept in cochlear implant electrode design — a concept never proposed before in the hearing electronic implants industry since its inception.

hrough a study involving 167 implanted ears, the research proved that the current uniform spacing between cochlear electrodes produces an unbalanced tonal representation, with tones concentrated in the apical region at a rate of 3.0 semitones/mm compared to 2.3 in the basal region.

The innovation is based on a logarithmic mathematical calculation that redistributes electrode spacing intervals according to the actual anatomy of the cochlea and the tonal distribution of the basilar membrane, achieving uniform tonal accuracy that provides the patient with a hearing experience closer to natural.

he results were published in Scientific Reports, a Nature-affiliated journal — one of the world's top scientific journals with a Q1 ranking — carrying this Saudi fingerprint with a clear message: national talents not only keep pace with science, but shape its foundations.

Our pride in the minds of this homeland knows no bounds, proving that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a platform for scientific innovation that serves humanity
