Not many centuries ago, in fact less than 100 years ago, KSA was self-sufficient in saffron production and used to export it abroad as well.
Not sure why this somehow stopped only to return in recent years:

It is a crop that can be grown across much of KSA. I always wondered why more of our farmers did not focus on cultivating it on a larger scale let alone at all. It is one of the world's most valuable agricultural corps.
The ancient Hijazi city of Ta'if (located almost 2000 meters above sea level) - next to Makkah has been famous for its rose production, rose water and rose perfume production since antiquity.
This tradition is getting a boost.

KSA has re-greened and reforested a land area larger than Lebanon. Somehow this has gotten very little attention in the global media - not that I am surprised - but it is a huge achievement that few countries can boost about and claim. In particular in such a challenging area of the world.
Much more realistic to focus on the more realistic parts of NEOM such as the Oxagon, Trojena (now rescheduled for later even though much of it has already been built), Sindalah (almost finished) etc.

Anyway it is hardly news that large scale projects get scaled down, changed or delayed. It occurs everywhere. In the UK, the country that your user displays, it takes 10 + years to renovate a simple small bridge in London and the overall infrastructure is in many ways much worse off than in KSA.

With very little dynamism and construction - unlike in KSA. I have seen this first hand throughout my visits in the UK. Most of the wealth in London is foreign as well (Arab, Russian) to begin with. Small Qatar has bought many of London's main landmarks. KSA owns towns of prime estate and landmarks in London too.

Well, as I wrote, I believe that most of this was always about creating hype (it worked) and was never really realistic to begin with. Even your article says so - there is no current technology available to make it a reality not to mention that the costs were and are unrealistic even for the likes of KSA. Personally, while I do like ambitious projects and "thinking outside of the box", some ideas are better left alone for the time being.

UK construction hit by worst run since global financial crisis
Output shrank for 12th month in a row in December, while housebuilding in deepest slump since 2020
