SMASH SLBM Testing - Nov 2025

I congratulate Pakistan on the successful testing of the SMASH missile. But I should also remind my Pakistani friends to return to reality.

So, no SMASH on new PN Naval Warships but something even better from our good friend China? 😝

Something that will again make Gen Asif Ghafoor to post on X "I told you we'll surprise you" haha

If tracking and targeting are done by other platforms why do we even need to bother putting SMASH on a warship?

Why not unmanned platforms that just carry the missile launchers.

Leave the platforms at undisclosed locations or even pilot them remotely. When Sea Sultan/Sats/subs have targeting info to pass them just press launch?

The Ukranians have demonstrated this drone carrier concept in the Russia/Ukranian war, there is a lot Pakistan can learn from that war.

I haven't made any suggestions, nor do I have any reliable sources of information on this matter.

Weapon technology research and development is a matter at the national scientific and technological level. However, the actual production and deployment of these weapons will involve many factors such as politics, industry, and economics. These are two completely different areas.

Pakistan pursues a diversified political and diplomatic strategy. It can purchase better weapons from many sources.

China's J-10 fighter jet derives its important technical concepts from the earlier J-9 fighter jet project.
Many years ago, China completed the Y-10 project, but the project was eventually terminated. Years later, we started the Y-20 project. The technical accumulation from the previous Y-10 project contributed significantly to the Y-20 project. Much of the technical expertise from our earlier J-13 project was used in today's J-35 project.

We should view the successful test of the SMASH missile rationally and avoid overthinking or drawing unwarranted conclusions.

Yes, but using them as Kamikaze USVs or using old unguided rockets in a swarm attack - not by putting their top tier missiles on these USVs 🥲

Kind of like what Japanese and Germans did back in WWII - except for no humans and dogs being sacrificed.

I imagine there are individuals in Pakistan, whose sole job 100% is too look at that war and learn as many lessons as possible. Pakistan has good relations with Ukraine and the Indian army is equipped and operates alot like the Russian Army, so there are some very valuable lessons there that Ukraine can share with Pakistan hopefully.

Yeah that we can. However, I'm pointing out something else here i.e. suppose this unmanned platforms is out at sea and experiences a malfunction, a manned platform can potentially fix the malfunction on the go - for an unmanned platforms that's not the case and is as good as considered lost (sunk by the enemy).

This challenge is different for aeriel vehicle, as already mentioned, in air such a malfunction can't be fixed by a pilot so the risk of manned/unmanned vehicle is the same, and not only the same but unmanned vehicle has the slight advantage of keeping the human alive.

This applies to anything unmanned, so a bit meaningless in all honesty

Not really. For surface vehicle the provision of human led fix to an operational malfunction is available, which isn't for an aeriel vehicle. Besides, the practical and environmental vulnerabilities are more for surface vehicles such as traffic, debris, and other operational related damages e.g. minor hull breach or a fire on board.

Again, not dismissing the use case for USVs - only partial disagreement over their suggested role (using them as unmanned top tier missile launch vehicles in place of naval warships) which currently isn't feasible.

Also, I will rest my case here as it'll lead to further derailment of the thread. So, agree to disagree? 👍🏻

I had no idea
Can it fly too?
This is the weapons bay of China's anti-submarine patrol aircraft. The P-8 also has a similar configuration.

All fixed-wing anti-submarine patrol aircraft have similar configurations. Even anti-submarine helicopters carry torpedoes when on patrol missions.

Then please enlighten us on the utility of a land based ASW missile paired with a platform that itself can persecute any targets it detects
u can launch 30 torpedo's or as many as you want instead of max 11 p8 can carry ( which most of the time it wont ) .

I see no reason why to put a long range large system on a smaller vessel with inherent stability issues due to their size.

One of the earliest challenges Pakistan faced when thinking of a triad was how to create a stabilized platform for launching systems like the Ghauri or Shaheen off its ships(funny story on how typical attempts at obfuscation got them insulted by a foreign expert they were consulting with on this).

The same will apply to smash - think a more stable frigate versus a small usv. Better suited to at best launching 30km ranged systems or simply running up to and ramming something. Better suited for that.
