Dozens of Israeli civilians crossed the border into Syrian territory in the Majdal Shams area, the IDF reported on Tuesday evening. The IDF said it is working to ensure their safe return to Israeli territory. The crossing took place near the Syrian Druze village of Hader, close to Majdal Shams.

This comes as Wafa al-Shaar, a peace activist from the Druze town of Mas’ade in the Golan Heights, said Tuesday she still hadn’t heard from her relatives in Syria’s Druze-majority Sweida province amid intense fighting there. “There’s guerrilla warfare in the streets—the situation is extremely difficult on every level,” she said, as violent clashes continued between Druze fighters and forces loyal to Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa across the border.

Earlier in the day, the IDF announced it had begun striking Syrian regime military assets in Sweida, following political authorization. The strikes came after Assad regime forces moved into the provincial capital in an effort to assert control for the first time. At least 99 people were reported killed in three days of clashes involving Druze fighters, Sunni Bedouins, and regime forces.

As regime troops entered Sweida, reports emerged of heavy fighting, explosions and gunfire. Shortly before noon, Syrian Defense Minister Rahaf Abu Qasra declared a total ceasefire, claiming a deal had been reached with local Druze leaders.

Damage from Israeli attack in Sweida

Anxiety remains high among Druze citizens in Israel. Protests erupted Tuesday afternoon at junctions near the towns of I’billin and Rama in the Lower Galilee, and in the Yokne’am area. Protesters burned tires, temporarily blocking both directions of Highway 6 near the Elyakim interchange.

Al-Shaar, who has not been able to contact her relatives, warned: “If the Druze region falls into the hands of the regime and Daesh-affiliated forces, all of Syria will plunge into a dark and dangerous period.” She added that her relatives face the risk of massacre, citing an incident in Sweida in which regime forces allegedly stormed a family home and slaughtered 15 members, from children to the elderly.

Reports from Syria claim dozens of Druze civilians were massacred during the recent violence, with others abducted and humiliated.

Knesset lawmaker Hamad Amar (Yisrael Beitenu), a member of the Druze community, stated: “The prime minister and defense minister have repeatedly promised to protect our brethren across the border. Today’s events prove al-Sharaa is incapable of governing, and demilitarizing the border region with Syria is a critical security interest for Israel.”

Knesset lawmaker Akram Hasson (New Hope), who was sworn into the Knesset on Monday, said: “I’ve called on decision-makers to immediately work toward toppling the al-Sharaa regime. Make no mistake—this murderous regime is backed by Erdoğan and Qatar. If Erdoğan gains control over our northern border through extremist Salafi forces, it will be disastrous. Al-Sharaa’s messages are not sincere—he’s biding time with Turkish support until he consolidates power, and then his guns will point at Israel.”

Former Deputy Minister Fateen Mulla, now a defense ministry adviser on Druze affairs, said: “We are deeply pained by the massacres, killings, and rapes still occurring in Sweida—the largest Druze stronghold in Syria and the Middle East. I warned the defense and political leadership about al-Sharaa’s brutality. He’s a terrorist wearing a tie, roaming freely through the civilized world. Israel must beware of a second Sinwar. I urge immediate humanitarian aid to save our brethren.”

Suleiman, a resident of Sweida, told Ynet that: “We welcome the sounds of the strikes—not just from the Israeli Air Force. The entire world must stand with us. We are being massacred on our own land—these are the invaders enforcing Sharia and Islamic coercion. Al-Sharaa has received global legitimacy to establish an Islamic state—and it’s happening here, in Syria. It’s tragic and extremely dangerous.”

Israeli Druze citizens demonstrated at multiple places in northern Israel today (Tuesday) to call on the Israeli government to protect the Syrian Druze population following recent attacks by Syrian government forces.

Videos posted to social media show demonstrators blocking roads and burning tires. Small demonstrations have been reported in the towns of Shfaram and Rameh, as well as on Route 6, where both sides of the road were blocked.

Earlier today, in response to the Syrian regime’s attacks on Druze communities in Suwayda, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the IDF to immediately strike regime forces and weaponry that had entered the Suwayda region—an area that, under Israel's demilitarization policies, was to remain free of troops and arms to prevent threats to Israel.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have directed the IDF to immediately attack the regime forces and the weaponry that entered the Sweida area of the Druze Mountain in Syria, and that the regime intended to use against the Druze - which was done in contravention of the demilitarization policy they decided on, of preventing the entry of forces and weaponry that endangers Israel in the southern region of Syria," Netanyahu and Katz said in a statement.

"Israel is committed to preventing harm being inflicted on the Druze in Syria, owing to the deep covenant of blood with our Druze citizens in Israel and their historical and familial link to the Druze in Syria. We are acting to prevent the Syrian regime from harming them, and to ensure the demilitarization of the region adjacent to our border with Syria."

This follows yesterday evening’s (Monday) identification of Syrian regime convoys, including armored personnel carriers and tanks, moving toward the area of As-Suwayda in southern Syria.

Subsequently, the IDF struck several armored fighting vehicles consisting of tanks, APCs, and MLRS, as well as access roads, in order to disrupt the convoys' arrival to the area.

Full and detailed information: What’s happening in Suwayda?

Since the fall of the Assad regime, there has been a local conflict in Suwayda among the armed Druze groups, which are made up of several smaller factions aligned under three separate leaderships. Each leadership holds a distinct religious, tribal, and social status, and there are internal disagreements among them.

The core of the conflict revolves around whether to accept or reject the new government, and whether to allow state institutions to operate within Suwayda. The Druze in Syria are divided into three main groups: one follows Sheikh Al-Hinawi (who supports the new government),

and another follows Laith Al-Balaous (also supportive of the new government). Laith is the son of Wahid Al-Balaous, who was assassinated by the Assad regime for opposing it.

Meanwhile, the third group is led by Hikmat Al-Hijri. This faction is composed of remnants of the Assad regime, outlaws, and sectarian Druze extremists who are militarily, politically, and financially backed by Israel. For some time now, they’ve been openly calling for Israeli protection and have publicly declared their opposition to the new Syrian government, citing ideological and sectarian differences.

This third group has become the dominant force in Suwayda, mainly because Al-Hijri holds the position of spiritual leader of the Druze in Syria, a role many consider illegitimate, as he assumed it during the Assad era under questionable circumstances. Under his leadership, the group has completely blocked Syrian state institutions from operating in Suwayda. Even basic services like electricity and water repairs were denied access, which led to a collapse in infrastructure and public services. Theft became rampant, affecting public stadiums, shops, and roads, while kidnappings for ransom increased. This directly led to tensions between the Druze and neighboring Arab tribes, especially after several tribal members were kidnapped along the Damascus–Suwayda highway, the root cause of the conflict.

With Israel issuing threats against the Syrian government and warning it not to approach Suwayda, claiming the Druze are under Israeli protection, the government had been unable to take action for months. As a result, insecurity and chaos spread, pushing the local Bedouin tribes to start defending themselves. They suffered casualties, both fighters and civilians, after Al-Hijri’s forces shelled Bedouin villages with rockets and mortars. The escalation intensified until the Syrian government was eventually forced to intervene to stop the violence.

After the government's attempt to intervene, Al-Hijri’s forces ambushed a military convoy killing everyone in it. They mutilated the bodies and circulated videos filled with sectarian and religious insults directed at the government and Syria’s majority Sunni population, sparking nationwide outrage. In response to this brutal act, the Damascus government decided to resolve the Suwayda situation once and for all: to disarm all factions, leave weapons only in the hands of the state, and treat anyone who refuses to surrender their weapons as an outlaw.

Both Sheikh Al-Hinawi and Laith Al-Balaous expressed full readiness to work with the government , emphasizing the urgent need for the presence of state institutions in Suwayda and the importance of ending the ongoing security chaos. In contrast, Al-Hijri rejected this approach, insisting that he should govern the region himself with his forces, without the need for government involvement.

On July 15, as clashes and fighting escalated in recent days, a joint statement was issued in the morning by Sheikh Al-Hinawi, Laith Al-Balaous, and the rest of the Druze factions aligned with them. The statement called for laying down arms, cooperating with the state, and affirming that the government’s presence, both institutionally and in terms of services, is essential. It stressed that Suwayda is an inseparable part of the Syrian state and its social fabric. The meeting included representatives from the Syrian government, the Ministry of Defense, and the Governor of Suwayda. Based on this decision, the entry of government forces into Suwayda was facilitated.

However, just hours later, Al-Hijri issued a solo statement rejecting everything that was agreed upon. He called for tribal mobilization against government forces, declared war on the Syrian army and its allies, and urged resistance. This reignited tribal sentiments in Suwayda, leading to a wave of ambushes targeting public security forces. Mere hours after that, he publicly declared his need for international support, prompting Israel to intervene and begin bombing government positions, which resulted in the deaths of Syrian soldiers.

It’s important to note here that the sidelining of Al-Hijri also came after U.S. statements affirming that Syria will not be divided into separate Druze, Kurdish, or Alawite states, and that the Syrian government is the sole authority responsible for governing a unified, undivided Syria.

So far, the Syrian government is honoring its commitment to eliminate all armed manifestations, restore security to Suwayda, disarm Al-Hijri’s forces of their heavy, medium, and personal weapons, hold criminals accountable, and arrest the Assad regime members who have joined Al-Hijri’s ranks. As part of the ongoing operations, massive weapons caches have been discovered hidden inside residential homes.

In other words, because of Al-Hijri’s statement today, and his rejection of the Druze community’s demand to live in peace under the framework of the Syrian state , hundreds have been killed from all sides. Israel intervened and launched strikes, sectarian hatred among civilians intensified, and many began to believe the false notion that all Druze are a single bloc led by an evil figure named Al-Hijri. As we’ve clarified, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

This is not a religious or sectarian conflict. It is a power struggle fueled by a warlord seeking to exploit the region’s instability to establish his own autonomous rule, even if that goes against the will of the majority of Druze in Suwayda.

It’s also worth noting that Al-Hijri is supported by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who view resolving the Druze issue and reintegrating Suwayda with the rest of Syria as an existential threat. To them, Suwayda remaining outside full state control is the last card they can use in resisting the reunification of Syrian territory.

The moment of destruction of the advancing tank of Salafi terrorists by the Zionist regime. The reason for the immediate ceasefire announcement by Jolani's war minister was the intensification of the Zionist regime's airstrikes on the Salafists' equipment and personnel.
