The Syrian air defense was obsolete..the only viable one was Russian under Russian troops control..it was also used to protect Bashar Al Assad's palace.. it was the S-400..With an Israeli-Russian deal not to use it against Israeli fighter jets if they don't attack Russian bases and Bashar's palace..

The best and most modern air defence system protecting Damascus was in fact Khordad 15. Assad had received 1-2 batteries just before his downfall and this was literally the best MRSAM/LRSAM that Iran had and was even newer than Bavar-373.

Let us see why the S-400 based at Khmeimim air base was not at all suitable to protect Damascus.

If you look at below map you can see the single battery placed in Khmeimim air base was 200km NW of Damascus and so was never in a position to intercept attacks originating from occupied Palestine/Syria from the SW of Syria.
