Tarbela Hydro Power Project - 5th Extension (1410 MW)

I think we should make more reservoirs and small dams and divert the electricity to nearby villages and towns, those storages can be used in floods to store water and avoid entire towns/villages getting wipe off.
No, that would be too sensible of a solution for the retards at the helm.

ISLAMABAD, Apr. 2 (Gwadar Pro) - A major milestone has been achieved at POWERCHINA’s Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, as the joint hydrostatic test of the steel penstock bifurcations was successfully completed, the company announced on Wednesday.

The tested structure includes one pressure relief pipe and three branch pipes. According to the company’s statement, the largest component features a sphere diameter of 14.6 meters, a maximum plate thickness of 130 millimeters, and a water-filled weight exceeding 12,000 tonnes—making it the largest and most complex structure of its kind in the world today.

The 64-hour test was carried out smoothly, with all results meeting expected standards.

“This marks a strong validation of the structure’s integrity, welding quality, and overall design, laying a solid foundation for the safe and stable operation of the generating units,” the statement said.

Tarbela 5th Extension HPP advances towards carbon market registration

May 1, 2026

LAHORE: The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5) has achieved a significant milestone in WAPDA’s engagement with international carbon markets.

The Project is expected to reduce approximately 565,905 tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to a total reduction of 5,659,053 tons over a fixed 10-year crediting period.

A WAPDA spokesman said here on Thursday the verification process for the Project has commenced and, upon completion, the Project will be registered with the Global Carbon Council (GCC). This will make T5 Pakistan’s first hydropower project to achieve GCC registration.

The progress has been made possible with technical support from the World Bank and through the successful completion of key milestones, including project submission and the engagement of GCC-approved international verifier namely LGAI Technologies, Spain. As part of the verification process, a site visit was conducted by the local auditor of LGAI Technologies.

According to the spokesman, during the visit, GM/PD T5, Umair Manan, briefed the auditor on the overall progress of the Project. Director (Civil) T5, Faisal Hayat, and Assistant Director Environment T5, Asima Mughal, also informed the auditor about ongoing construction activities, in addition to environmental and social management aspects of the Project.

Cost overruns: Another USD300m sought from World Bank for ‘T4HP’

ISLAMABAD: The government has sought a second additional financing of USD 300 million from the World Bank for the Tarbela Fourth Extension Hydropower Project (T4HP) to address cost overruns in the Tarbela Fifth Extension Hydropower Project (T5HP).

Official documents revealed that T5HP is at an advanced stage of construction, with progress described as highly satisfactory and commissioning of the generation units expected in July 2027.

The documents stated that completion of T5HP is essential for the safe operation of Tunnel 5 and the Tarbela Reservoir, Pakistan’s most critical infrastructure for irrigation and electricity generation.

The proposed AF will be the final tranche of investment from the World Bank to help achieve the outcomes envisaged under T5HP.

Typical, we build everything with foreign loans and then break our backs to pay back as we can't earn enough $$. Not sure when will Pakistan break this cycle.

No matter how many cost overruns, you simply cannot match the incredible benefits Tarbela has given Pakistan and will continue to give.

6000MW of pure hydro power (when 5th extension is completed) is no joke, especially during peak summer times.

Pakistan has an incredible low CO2/KWh ratio even though we burn Coal and natural gas just because of the timely construction of hydro power projects. Hopefully Dasu/Basha dams will be similar.

This project must be completed at all costs.

No doubt. But see we build mega projects with foreign loans. Our only source of income is remmitance as export of goods is stuck at $30bn since 2010!

Imagine that, in 2010 $30bn was worth 50% more then today.

Loans are absolutely not bad, infact beneficial when put to good use.

Tarbela is literally that example, you take loans and international expertise and build infrastructure to support your growth in umimaginable ways.

Tarbela is not just a power station churning out MWs of power......it is a serious strategic asset helping manage water and floods.

Loans are good when they are put to use to raise economic progress and growth. If the resulting economic growth is higher than the cost of Loan, then job well done.

Unfortunately in Pakistan loans are taken and contracts awarded to own contractors and companies and funds siphoned off. ZTBL is prime example of that. So is PIA/Pakistan Steel/GENCOS/Railways where loans are taken and then funds siphoned off in procurement and the original problem still remains that the company is still bankrupt after 30 years.

LOANS ARE NOT BAD. YOUR CORRUPT MOTHERF***** ARE BAD.

Tarbela fifth expansion pin power project with 1530 MW output capacity is 64% complete.

Construction work on all major project sites is progressing satisfactorily. Upon completion of the fifth expansion project, Tarbela's output will increase from 4888 MW to 6418 MW Gee.

The works on all seven key components are progressing at a satisfactory pace.

With completion of Tarbela 5th Extension, power generation capacity at Tarbela will increase from 4888 MW to 6418 MW.
