POWERCHINA has completed the dry-season intake sealing works at the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project in Pakistan on schedule, hitting the impoundment target and keeping subsequent tunnel construction moving smoothly ahead.

Facing complex site conditions, the project team completed key tasks including excavation and support at the shaft bend, concrete lining, and installation of a temporary steel plug.

This milestone paves the way for the completion of the connecting tunnel and the commissioning of the powerhouse, ensuring steady progress in overall project execution.

This project cost Rs317bn if it doesn't increase any further.

But it will only generate 1.5 billion units per year. Doesnt look like a good deal to me.

"The collapse has contributed to at least a two-year delay and more than 285 per cent cost escalation in the project, whose cost has risen from Rs82 billion to Rs317bn.

As a result, the project’s levelised generation cost over 30 years may rise to around Rs27-28 per unit — the country’s highest so far for renewable energy — making it economically unviable and unsustainable, according to the Planning Commission."

"The ECNEC approved the 5th Tarbela extension project at a 282% upward revised cost of Rs316 billion. The original cost of the project was Rs82 billion."

This project is a disaster.
