Tesla to unveil Robotaxi on 8/8: Musk

Looks great but still gives me the shivers at that speed. I think a mass rollout between 5-40mph is a good start.

I loved full self driving on the city streets. I was comfortable with it driving past bicycles, mom's with strollers, and the craziest of intersections. Rather mellow and not anywhere near as stressful as you may think. On a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of stress it was like a 3 most of the time. It was like being on a long people-mover conveyor belt at the airport. Pretty uneventful. Which is why I think it would be great if all cars had it.

However...having it drive 85mph on the highway...um..noooooooooo....sorry not for me. Don't need to be in the 10 range perpetually.

Any new updates on this? Like, does it run 24/7 or is it always self-driving? And when there are no passengers, where does the car go? Back to the garage or just stays on the street?

The date was changed from 8/8 to 10/10 so we'll know in 2 days.

Tesla says it has launched ride-hailing Robotaxi teaser to employees only

Tesla is using Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to court employees around in two areas.

Tesla announced earlier today that it has already launched an abbreviated version of what will eventually be launched as its Robotaxi fleet in both Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. It is available to employees, Tesla said.

The automaker did not specify exactly how long it has been operating the fleet, which uses the company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) suite, but it did indicate that it has completed over 1,500 trips, totaling 15,000 miles of driving.

As seen in the video shared by the company, there is a human driver still responsible for keeping tabs on the car and its movements. It is not the version that Tesla plans to eventually roll out in June, which would be completely unsupervised.

Tesla said that using this service has helped develop and validate Full Self-Driving networks. It will also be used to create a mobile app that will facilitate ride requests, vehicle allocation, mission control, and remote assistance operations.

The app appears to be somewhat similar to the images Tesla shared of a mock-up version of the platform last year.

Right around this time in 2024, Tesla shared images of what would be the ride-hailing app for the company, enabling passengers to request a ride from a driverless robotaxi:

We also know, according to Tesla App Updates on X, that Tesla will simply integrate this ride-hailing portion of the platform directly into the app the company already operates. There will be no dedicated app for requesting a ride:

Tesla said it still remains on track to launch a pilot version of the Robotaxi program in Austin in June, something the company has reiterated several times since the start of the new year.

Tesla's Robotaxi Rollout Gets Timely Boost: Trump Administration Announces Exemptions For Autonomous Driving Companies

The Trump administration has taken the first steps towards easing regulatory hurdles for U.S.-based autonomous driving companies.

What Happened: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or the NHTSA, announced it is updating regulations, which will allow domestic autonomous vehicle manufacturers to enjoy some exemptions to U.S. Auto Safety Standards previously reserved for imported vehicles, U.S. DOT Secretary Sean Duffy said in a video shared on X on Thursday.

From the Wright Brothers to the first astronauts on the moon, our nation has always been at the forefront of transportation technology.
That's why today we're unveiling a new Automated Vehicle Framework from @USDOT's Innovation Agenda pic.twitter.com/W3kbMUwQSn

— Secretary Sean Duffy (@SecDuffy) April 24, 2025
The video also reiterated that NHTSA will continue to require automakers to report crashes involving self-driving systems, but it will remove "redundancies" and "streamline the process," which Duffy said will help innovation. The agency will share more information in the coming months.

Why It Matters: The change in regulation comes in as autonomous vehicles are evolving in the U.S. market, with companies like Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Waymo already at the forefront of the sector having logged more than 20 million autonomous miles and offering over 2 million paid robotaxi rides.

This regulatory change could also provide a boost to Elon Musk's Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) as the EV giant also unveiled its autonomous ride-hailing services in a limited rollout in Austin and San Francisco. Musk also shared in the Q1 earnings call that '10 to 20' Model Ys will offer paid robotaxi rides in June this year.
