It's all about sales not "better" design. Flashy appearance car models come and go and it's about consistent sales not flash.

Which is still on the road today

People just don't get it. Flash means nothing.
It's actually a detriment. The car company wastes tons of R&D and tooling money for little long term gain on a car that's hot and then completely not.

You want a consistent yearly seller like the Toyota Corolla. Not a flash in the pan like the Mitsubishi 3000GT.

Even in China you can see how a consistency strategy with not the most exciting looking cars can pay off

Do you see the cheaper-than-a-Tesla BYD Han or any of the other hyped cool looking cars from XPeng/Nio/Li Auto with the greatest features talked about over the last 5 years? No, they will get awesome review videos saying they are great/magical/futuristic/amazing and then slip into the usual obscurity after a few years...and the boring ones remain.

I mean how Tesla builds cars. Musk puts emphasis on tech, not on design. Look at design of cybercab, cybertruck they look ugly by any standards. But it seems there is a lot of customers who prefer tech over design. That’s totally a different approach to let’s say Apple. Usually technology alone doesn’t sell products.

The UK is a hard problem to solve for self-driving cars. I am not convinced we will see many of these cars except between specific locations on geo-fenced routes at the outset imho.

I reckon over time, each and every street and road will get classified as being self-driving compatible or not, and that will increase the scope of these cars.

I can't imagine these cars driving around the side streets in Alum Rock in Birmingham, or the same in Rusholme in Manchester for example.

I swear when we've had diversions force goray through the ends there have been times to get through traffic I've left my car, walked up to the blockage and guide them through it. People just sit there looking at each other like "oh shit what do we do now".

Also imagine country roads. Single track, ditches each side man's coming round blind bends at 60mph and then a tractor doing 10mph around the next one. Go over the hill and you have posh twats on horses and a line of traffic because some leftie is too scared to overtake the horse.

I think the focus for the UK should be on electrification infrastructure, maybe a government funded or subsidized home installation of car chargers as a strategic investment, I don't see self driving in the UK being a factor for all the reasons you have stated.

I think it's stupid to still maintain this 1 car per adult model. I have a radical idea.

Free public transport nationally. Buses, trams, coaches, trains, taxis. All free. Put the taxi drivers on salaries. Electric everything, focus on renewable energy, charge us more taxes to operate it.

I spend £400 a month on fuel for 2 cars. Why not pay £150 extra in tax instead? In exchange for that I get a world class public transport network.
