The ship was being repaired when it was caught in flames

Former Russian aircraft carrier Minsk suffers disastrous fire in Nantong, China

@ElentirENG ESTwo years ago I published here an article about an abandoned aircraft carrier, the Minsk, which had belonged to the Russian Navy.
The infiltration of a group of Spanish explorers into the Russian aircraft carrier Minsk
Minsk: an abandoned Soviet aircraft carrier with a plane, torpedoes and missiles inside

This ship was decommissioned in 1993 and in 1995 it was sold to a group of Chinese businessmen, who wanted to turn it into a theme park. The company went bankrupt in 2006 and the ship was sold again, leaving it almost abandoned. In March 2024 we saw here an infiltration of Spanish explorers on that ship. The projects to refurbish it and turn it into a theme park were delayed. Sadly, today we see this:
The Twitter account @LoveWorld_Peopl notes: "The Minsk was severely damaged by a fire at the Suxitong industrial park where it was undergoing construction. The ship was formerly a tourist attraction known as Minsk World." The vessel was in China's Nantong Lagoon on the Yangtze River.
A local Chinese media outlet reports: "The Suxitong Science and Technology Industrial Park Fire Rescue Brigade reported that at around 16:00 on the 16th, a fire broke out during the dismantling and renovation of an old aircraft carrier on the Yangtze River in Suxitong Park. At present, fire, emergency, public security and other departments are working hard to deal with the incident at the scene. There are no casualties, and the cause of the accident is under investigation."

The Twitter account @oxminer_lowsen has posted these two photos of the fire. Everything indicates that the aircraft carrier would have been seriously damaged and beyond repair, given the dimensions of the fire.

It is a tourist attraction isn’t it?

Which is sad but not an actual PLAN vessel

They bought it with the intention of converting it into a carrier, but ended up being a theme park ride

Though it is just a park, it has fires less frequently than India's active carriers.

It became a park in 1998 and had one fire in 26 years time.

And INS Vikramaditya had three fires in four years. Until September 2022, INS Vikramaditya is India's only aircraft carrier.

Yeah but this is likely going to be a pollution nightmare, combined with proximity to such a populated area. They should have just scrapped the ship if they are not going to upkeep it well rather than wait for this powder keg possibility.

Bonhomme fire had its asbestos issues already, I guess we will see later just how much asbestos and other stuff was onboard and now released into the lagoon and environs....and if firefighters dealing with this have proper protocols/safety themselves.

According to a briefing from the fire department in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. The fire, which did not cause any casualties, broke out while the carrier was undergoing demolition and remodeling. The ship had about 44 tons of asbestos materials, but these asbestos materials have long been removed because they may cause cancer in visitors. It was because of the removal of the asbestos material, which was used as fireproofing and insulation, that the fire spread in a short period of time.

Only??

I am sorry about their loss.

No, it was never intended to be a carrier as they knew its condition not good as they rebought it from South Korea in the beginning, they just wanted to study it and use it as a tourist attraction.

Hope this doesn't cause too much environmental damage by way of oil spills etc.

good thing no casualties.

It's a funny title, it's not an air craft carrier any more and it was not lost by the Chinese.
Garbage thread, misleading title reported.
