Like the international chemistry olympiad, mathematics Olympiad is good measurement of countries STEM power and resources and future development.

Soviet Union is not added to Russian winnings and neither is HK/Macau added to China.

I am surprised to see the UK so high, especially given the state of primary and secondary education system in the UK ( though our university system is still top tier world class.).

Surprised to see Vietnam a tropical country ranked so high, even ahead of Japan, Germany and UK. Maybe will have a good chance to achieve industrialization in the not too distant future, that will be a great feat for a tropical country.

Yeah i am surprised by hungary and romania as well. What this doesnt tell us is when they won it. Many probably were competitive during cold war era and last 30 years probably haven't done so well.

Vietnam has east asian confucius style culture and therefore they do better than other south east asians besides singapore which also have confucius style culture too. Vietnam is quite competitive and may someday rival South Korea but thats far into the future

China first participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1985. The United States first participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1974. Russia (as part of the Soviet Union) first participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad at its inaugural event in 1959. Combined, Russia and the Soviet Union have won 187 gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) through 2026.

Yeah you make a good point, China came in late to the party but undoubtedly at the top even though the lateness. I thought Taiwan would have won more to be honest because they did so well in chemistry olympiad.

Little surprised Singapore didn't make the the top 15 list, maybe the country is too small with too few talents. A Taiwanese won a Nobel prize in chemistry, I think the only Chinese to win in chemistry, so they are strong in chemistry.

Yeah for sure East Asians tend to do very well in these things. I bet most American winners were East asians as well no doubt. These olympiads and PISA give an Idea of where the country is heading as well due to high education leads to technological innovations. Countries like Malaysia could never break out of middle income trap because they didn't have the innovation and technological breakthoughts.
