The 2026 box office charts have a new champion: Disney/Pixar’s franchise hit Toy Story 5 has officially surpassed a billion in box office in its sixth week of release. With $1.022 billion ($488 million domestic, $573 million international), the movie has overtaken another animated feature, Illumination/Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, to become the top-grossing film of 2026 so far, and the third film to reach this milestone (the other being the Michael biopic).
Toy Story 5 is on track to become the highest-grossing release in Pixar’s 31-year-old film franchise, as it is expected to overtake Toy Story 4 ($1.07B, 2019) in the next few days. It is the third Toy Story movie to cross the billion-dollar mark, after Toy Story 3 ($1.06B, 2010). The fifth installment scored the biggest opening of the year with $160M, and has been buoyed on its box office journey by strongly positive critical reviews (92% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience ratings (94%).
Despite this latest box office triumph, layoffs of hundreds of full time employees were enacted at Disney last week, with Pixar reportedly the hardest hit division.
Variety points out that this year should see the most billion-dollar runs since the COVID-19 pandemic, with the next one expected to be Chris Nolan’s The Odyssey followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day (out July 31). There were zero in 2020 due to lockdown measures and theater closures; one in 2021; two in 2023 (including The Super Mario Bros. Movie); three in 2024 (including Inside Out 2 and Moana 3) and three last year (including Zootopia 2).
On the domestic weekend charts, Toy Story 5 came in at No. 3 with $10M. Illumination/Universal’s Minions & Monsters hit No. 5 with $9.6M for a four-week total of $155.4M ($411.8M worldwide). Disney’s live-action Moana remake remained at No. 2 in its third week with $10.5M ($228M ww), coming in behind The Odyssey‘s $87M in week 2 ($639.6M ww).
