Turkey Greece Relations and Maritime Disputes

Greeks are upset that Turkey is "X-raying" their ship. lol

“Our maritime borders are also European borders, and the law of the sea applies to everyone,” says Athens’ shipping minister.

They cry a lot these days.

Greece is withdrawing the Patriot batteries it deployed to Karpathos (Kerpe) and Evros.

📍NEW — Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis:

▪️“The Blue Homeland doctrine cannot have any basis in international law and would lead to an escalation of tensions.”

▪️“If Turkey makes such a move, tensions will likely rise, and that’s clear.”

▪️“Greece has the means to manage this both through preventive and direct intervention methods.”

▪️“The ‘I want it this way’ approach put forward by Turkey is a sign not of strength, but of weakness.”

▪️“If Turkey wants to revive past stances it has expressed or impose new ones there, that would not be constructive/backfire.”

▪️“Our call for calm does not mean we will remain inactive.”

▪️“We are not in a phase of discussing continental shelf and EEZ issues with Turkey, as we only intend to address those.”

▪️“We haven’t been able to start talks, because we will not discuss any other matters concerning our sovereignty besides this one.”

▪️“Without resolving this core issue between us, there will be no sustainable peace.”

▪️“Our policy of de-escalating tensions with Turkey is not a sign of weakness; it is a strategic choice that gives us the opportunity to strengthen our defences, forge international alliances, and expand our geopolitical footprint.”

▪️“With the agreements signed with Israel, the US, Gulf countries, and India, our geopolitical footprint has expanded like never before.”

▪️“The reason for Turkey’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric is their belief that Greek moves are limiting Ankara’s regional role.”

It seems like Greece is serious about the 12-mile issue. Before 2020, the Armenians were highly aggressive too, but once they got hit with an iron fist, they completely backed down. I guess we need to give the Greeks the exact same treatment.

No the Dynamics are a little different right now, It would not be in Turkish interests for a kinetic exchange with Greece, given that the Israelis are hoping for something like that. The move needs to be countered in a different way, if they do that.
