The Israelis both had the numerical advantage, as well as the qualitative advantage on top of the initiative in launching operations.
Btw, the Soviets Union wasn't really involved in 48.

It wasn't effective outside of murder, b/c Hamas fighters are underground and in a war of attrition in an insurgency. And Israel failed to destroy the tunnel network(or even the communication network), which allowed them to keep the insurgency going.
They resorted to trying to starve them out, and literally directives to "kill anything that moves", they failed outside of killing women and children. b/c Hamas wasn't fighting a conventional war, it was literally only ambushes, they would come above ground put in landmines, an blown them up when israelis drove over them, they would then ambush the recovery team when there was a stress signal sent. They targetted them during all sorts of phases by literally walking up to a merkhava, placing a ied and blowing it up, or RPGs from so close range that the Arena system couldn't activate.
Its a type of warfare the Israelis weren't prepared for.

The clashes around the Tishrin Dam continue especially on 3 axes and are getting more intense every day. Especially around Syriatel Hill, it is the most action-packed area in terms of clashes. Targets belonging to the organization elements are being hit with artillery and mortar shells at the SW end of the Shash Mountains. While F-16s are constantly making sorties in the air, SİHAs are hunting the terrorists by performing delicate operations in areas where "human shield" actions are being organized by the organization sympathizers. In addition, the positions and tunnels in the region are constantly being hit by artillery and tank fire. YPG/PKK elements have not been able to conduct drone propaganda in the region for 3 days. "Electronic Warfare" is probably being implemented in the region.
