Members of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee targeted Turkey and Syria.

Republican Representative
Keith Self:

“Turkey is increasingly turning into an Islamic dictatorship.”

“Erdoğan is reversing the secular state founded by Atatürk, and I believe this will eventually lead to conflict between Turkey and Israel.”

“Turkey is trying to take Iran’s place as a regional power in the Middle East.”

Republican Representative
Josh Brecheen:

“Erdoğan is trying to reestablish the Ottoman Empire, which would require going all the way to Jerusalem.”

“Syrian President Shara never opposes Turkey at any stage; Shara is not honest about what his real goal is.”

“My big concern is that we are enabling Turkey’s prosperity.”

“Shara is not honest; even if prosperity comes, he will not change his jihadist mentality.”

Republican Representative
Brian Mast:

“The Syrian government’s move against the U.S.-allied SDF is unacceptable.”

“Syria is not even close to where it should be today; I am not yet satisfied with the progress made by Syrian President Shara.”

“Many of the steps he has taken are steps backward.”

Republican Representative
Mike Lawler:

“The United States lifted sanctions to give Shara a chance to prove his position, despite his terrorist connections.”

“However, the conditions have not been met, and Syria’s trajectory under Shara’s administration is a source of deep concern.”

Republican Representative
Randy Fine:

“Once a Muslim terrorist, always a Muslim terrorist.”

Democratic Representative
Johnny Olszewski:

“References to women, love, pre-Islamic culture, and human evolution have been removed from Syria’s education system, sending a fearful message to religious and ethnic minorities.”
