The problem for Pakistan, is that they could well end up in India, used against Pakistan or free enough capacity in India to speed up the S400 delivery schedule.

Better, if they were reserved for the rebuilding of the IADS for Syria or even sell them to Iran.

Well there's a possibility of that happening. Or Russia might refit and use it themselves. They seem to be dire need of AD right now.

Turkey was an investor in the F35 program, did not make sense for them to jeopardize it by buying the S400.

Buying Russian hardware and being a NATO member at the same time is a big red flag to the Americans.

Quite frankly - when this system was selected the advertised capabilities of the system, capabilities of Turkish Defense Industry and most importantly Erdogan’s geopolitical objectives post the coup attempt made the F-35 vs S-400 debate a personal action.

Today, Turkey can produce systems in the next 5 years that can fill the gap of this political paper weight.

The F-35 however is necessary because Kaan is still nowhere at scale while Turkish security AND operational tactic development needs warrant a 5th Gen in place. Because of Its participation in the R&D along with supply chain TuAF can absorb the F-35 relatively quickly - perhaps even faster than the Greeks.

Correct. Turkey can quickly make use of the F-35 network connectivity to Turkish systems which the Kaan will not and likely never have in the same level of the F-35. This is why cht load of nations want the F-35 its ability to ISR/ELINT is much valued.

It’s a bit of an exaggeration regarding KAAN interoperability because by the time it comes operational a lot of Turkey’s NET will be homemade so technically F-35 will have the disadvantage. But essentially the F-35 is at the end a flying supercomputer equipped C4/ISR platform - it works best when tied to an extensive net.

Nations that don’t have such a net either rely on working within such a net in any combat scenario (e.g Singapore) or the F-35 is basically an expensive purchase for them which they will never fully utilize
