Turkmenistan unveils Chinese-made FK-2000 air defense system
chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-09-28 18:07Turkmenistan has inducted and deployed the Chinese-made FK-2000 air defense system, which was shown to the Turkmen public for the first time at a military parade on Sunday.
During the Turkmen Independence Day parade in Ashgabat, the national capital and largest city of the Central Asian country, eight FK-2000 vehicles appeared in the air defense formation, following three types of Chinese-built air defense missile systems — the FD-2000, KS-1A and FM-90.
The move makes Turkmenistan the fifth country to operate the FK-2000, after the United Arab Emirates, Chad, Ethiopia and Sudan.
Developed by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, the country's major tactical missile maker, the FK-2000 is an all-weather, short-range air defense system featuring an integrated gun-and-missile configuration. It can use guns, missiles or both to counter incoming threats, depending on the circumstances.
Integrating active radar and multimode electro-optical detection, a single vehicle can effectively engage a broad range of targets within a 25-kilometer radius, including cruise missiles, precision-guided bombs, air-to-ground missiles, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and quadcopter or multirotor drones. It can provide air defense support to frontline combat units and major fixed assets, and can also engage ground targets.
The system features a high level of integration and strong mobility, enabling rapid response, deployment and maneuverability, as well as battlefield survivability. It can conduct combat operations while moving at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour, autonomously searching for and detecting targets before launching missiles or gun shells to provide air defense coverage for ground units on the move.
According to its designers, the system can be adapted to user-specified interfaces and protocols to enable networked operations. Its radar and missiles can counter active and passive jamming as well as ground clutter, while its electro-optical devices can resist interference from decoy flares, flames, artillery blasts and infrared searchlights.
