On Monday, the UAE and Malaysia signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities for cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.

This came as part of a visit by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Abu Dhabi for an indefinite period, according to the official Emirati news agency, WAM.

The signing was witnessed by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and the Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“The memorandum of understanding aims to employ artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics techniques to enhance community safety and operational efficiencies,” according to WAM.

Under the memorandum of understanding, the two parties will work to enhance technical cooperation in many key areas, including the development of protection systems supported by artificial intelligence, and the establishment of high-performance computing data centers, in a way that contributes to improving customs tax collection mechanisms and enhancing operational efficiency, according to the same source.

The investment memorandum of understanding was also signed by the UAE’s Minister of Investment, Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi, and by Malaysia’s Interior Minister, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

On the sidelines of signing the memorandum of understanding, ways to enhance bilateral political and economic relations were discussed, according to the Emirati agency.

According to the agency, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the field of utilizing advanced technology and artificial intelligence techniques in various fields of work, especially those that reflect positively on improving the standard of living and quality of life.

This memorandum represents a “quantum leap” after the ratification of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) concluded in October 2024.

The UAE has strong economic relations with Malaysia, as non-oil trade between them reached 2.5 billion US dollars in the first half of 2024, an increase of 7 percent compared to the same period in 2023, according to WAM.

Malaysia is ranked 12th as the UAE's largest Asian trading partner, and fifth among member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In contrast, the UAE is considered Malaysia's second largest trading partner in the Arab world, as it accounts for 32 percent of Malaysia's trade volume with the region. According to Wm.
