Him: For instance food delivery rates have skyrocketed. I used to get food delivered for a minimal fee and now the fees are out of control.
Me: You get your food delivered? You have like 20 food places within 30 seconds of your front door and probably 100 within 2 minutes. Meanwhile I'm in the quiet suburbs and I drive to get my food because I'm not paying for delivery+tip which would probably be higher than what I ordered.

That Islamic Civilization was the real western civlization all along.
Islam is actually a simplification and deeper level concept of the cultures, norms and ways of life in the classical world. Thats why "People of the book" combines all major peoples in the classical world: Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians and Muslims.
If we think of Islam as the combined, yet simplified, expression of the classical world, its evident that Rome (especially the christened version of it) and Greece is also part of this broad concept. Because classical Greece was what it was through interaction with Persia, Phoenicia, Asia Minor, Levant, Iraq and specifially Egypt. Greeks didnt even have clue or interest in western europe and its primitive cultures.
When Persians conqoured Greek city states, it increased the imperial Persian cultural impact on Greeks even more. About 100 years later the greeks (Alexander) conqoured the Persian empire when it began declining. Spreading greek culture to middle east. But we already said greeks was influenced by middle east.
Rome when it rose from a small city state to a major Empire, conqoured Greece and they just adored everything Greek culture, even adopting the Greek pantheon. We already discussed that Greece itself was heavily influenced by the what we today call the middle east. Then Rome itself also got heavily influence by middle east through contact, trade and then conquest of Egypt. Actually Rome was probably even more influenced by Phoenicians, whoms' Alphabet is still used today. The phoenicians were essentially a lebanese semitic people which settled in present day Tunisia.
The vast majority of Roman wealth and population was concentrated in the eastern half of the empire. Western half, especially west of Italy, was a backwater populated by primitive huntergatherer, small settlement and agrarians.
When Rome split in two administrative units, emperor Constantine naturally moved the centre of Roman power to the capital closest to its power, wealth and population centres. The the western half and Rome itself was overrrun and looted by germanic tribes. These tribes later founded small petty kingdoms all over western half of the empire, over time claiming to be the true heir of the Roman Empire in order to gain legitimacy. When western Europe became wealthy in the 1800s scholars began calling Eastern Roman empire "Byzantine" as to make it appear even less true Roman Empire. Which is absurd. It would be like Alaska split from the US union and few hundred years later claim that it is true successor and inheritor of US mainland.
Down the road when the Caliphate gained its initial zenith its capital was in Damascus and for a brief moment Jericho and Harran. All three settlements were previously Roman governed cities. The Umayaads were focused on the mediterranean and not Persia.
Western Europe continued to drift into dark ages though the middle ages. The renaissance was largely spurred by contact with Muslim Hispania, the only high culture in western Europe, and to an extent also via the Crusades. Muslim philosophers like Al Ghazali, Avicenna and Averroes heavily influenced Western European thought.
