Was just talking to the guys at Bliss Munitions (the leading munitions line manufacturers in US) they said the DOD has put out a tender for 486m rounds of 6.8 by 2028.
Initially SigSauer was trying to fill that but they found that Bliss had better QC on the final product also reduced the complaints of the round being too spicy sometimes, so they will subcontract it out to Bliss and they are making the new lines for it now.
So that seems like the DOD is doubling down on the 6.8 and the NGSW

Footage of the collision between the American destroyer Truxtun DDG-103 and the supply ship USNS Supply T-AOE-6 during refueling. The video was filmed on February 11 in the Caribbean Sea during UNREP exercises, presumably near Cuba. Judging by the video, the destroyer Truxtun DDG-103 approached the supply ship USNS Supply at an excessively steep angle.
