Remember when the US pilot crashed in Iran?

US forces quickly established a security perimeter around the crash site while the rescue operation was underway, using aircraft and other assets to secure the area until the pilot was recovered.

Now imagine that concept applied on a much larger and more permanent scale. A heavily militarised zone would likely be defended with substantial military resources to deter or prevent incursions. History has shown that maintaining such positions can be costly and risky—as seen in places like Beirut and Somalia—but if a state is determined to hold a strategic area, it will often commit significant forces and adopt robust security measures to defend it.

First lets remind you of the costs the US incurred from their very brief and covert incursion into Iranian territory for 24-48 hours:

- 1x F-15E shot down (starting the crisis)
- 2x MC-130J transport planes destroyed and abandoned
- 4x MH-6 special operation helicopters destroyed and abandoned
- 1x A-10 Warthog shot down (and another A-10 damaged)
- 1x MQ-9 drone shot down
- 2x UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters damaged
- Several pilots injured

That was just over 24-48 hours and while the entire operation remained hidden.

So what we have been told from briefing so far:
1. Official bill is $37.5 billion (so far). Far lower than the $110 bil quoted elsewhere (which mirrors the analysis by RUSI about US using lower cost strike packages). But this is still an increase of $8bn compared to the last public estimate. The Pentagon will need a further supplement of $67bn totally 104 billion.

8. In the most alarming development - increased activity has been seen at Diago Garcia since the UK PM authorised use of UK soverign bases for Defensive operations against IRAN:

Conclusion: Safe bet B2's likely could be utilized, however this could be a bluff as we saw during the last strategic strikes on Iran.
 
The approval of the use of Akrotiri, Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Diago Garcia coupled with the increased RAF presence in CENTCOM over past 18 hours indicates expansion of UK role in providing support to the US operations in CENTCOM AOR directed towards Iran.

As I have mentioned previously on July 16th - the Royal Navy and NATO Mine Hunters are now operating in the Middle East:

This ship is escorted by the following two German Navy vessels:

FGS Fulda is built of non-magnetic steel and was commissioned in 1998. She is optimised for mine warfare in coastal waters and deployments out of the NATO area for these vessels is rare. She typically carries a crew of around 40 to 45, including mine clearance divers. She has a hull-mounted sonar and would deploy divers or an ROV to neutralise mines.

FGS Mosel is designed to sustain of smaller warships such as minehunters, corvettes and fast patrol craft. She can act as a command ship and carries fuel, fresh water, ammunition, provisions and spare parts, and has workshops and medical facilities.

HMS Dragon is one of the most advanced warships in the world, the Type 45 destroyer is capable of shooting down the types of drones and ballistic missiles being launched by Iran.

The Americans were willing to risk—and lose—a tremendous amount of equipment in an effort to rescue a single service member. That's what that special unit is designed and trained for.

By comparison, I question how Iran's leadership has protected some of its own senior figures. In my view, if a senior leader can be killed on home soil despite extensive security, it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the state's security apparatus.

If the United States were ever to establish a permanent military presence inside Iran, I think it would likely devote substantial resources to protecting its personnel, based on how it has protected its forces in past conflicts.

How come Iran hasn't captured any of the US special forces that are reportedly currently doing recon in Iran?

Yeah, my point is that the US incurred significant losses to recover one pilot in one short covert operation, so the idea they could establish a lasting presence on Iranian soil is not realistic, in my opinion.

Iran's security / intelligence apparatus is terrible, no doubt about that. But Iran is also facing a very powerful enemy who have waged economic war on Iran to incite chaos and regime change for 40+ years. But it's not a total excuse, the counterintelligence agencies have been woefully incompetent.

A small number of independent covert agents can be surprisingly hard to detect. Look at Ukraine assassinating Russian generals in the middle of Moscow, and smuggling in a large number of FPV drones to take out strategic bombers across Russian air bases simultaneously. But an established military presence is a very difficult ball game.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any major military buildup there.

Isn't it normal for Diego Garcia to have a small number of ships and aircraft stationed there during peacetime anyway?
