Phyllis Fong spent a long and successful career with the USDA. President George W. Bush named her as the United States Department of Agriculture's Inspector General in 2002. She held this position until January 24, 2025, when Trump terminated her.

She also served in Trump's first government. She continued her role as the USDA Inspector General from 2017 to 2021 during his first term. She was not the only one sacked. In fact, she was one of 17 government watchdogs fired by Trump in what was termed as a "Friday-night purge".
