Walmart actually opened a store on the West side of Detroit back in the 1990s.
Wasn't too long afterwards they just closed it down. Cannot find a news article. Think the store didn't last a year.
A few miles to the east was my local grocery store. Very nice, for Detroit, and never a problem. Even for whites like me.
Why?
I think the Nation of Islam had something to do with it. Friends with "OV", respected member of NoI who also lived in the area. Ex-convict who knew the street gangs.
Ten years later, took a friend from South Africa to see the Henry Ford Museum & Village in Dearborn. He told me he needed new batteries for his camera.
Got off the Lodge freeway in a bad area. Blew this guy's mind seeing gangbangers walking all over. Told him this was the safest place to get batteries for his camera before we reached Dearborn.
Parked my car at my former local grocery store I haven't seen in years. My SA friend was terrified of getting out. Suit yourself, give me your dead batteries and I will get new ones for you.

If I give it some more thought, can come up with many more memories of Detroit, and other large cities, I used to live in.
I am lucky to be alive. Think overall, five stolen cars, two armed robberies, a car jacking, and numerous attempts to intimidate me because I was white.
