“The Constitutional Chamber of Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered on Saturday that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez assume the role of acting president of the country in the absence of Nicolás Maduro, who was detained early Saturday morning in an operation by U.S. forces.
The court ruling said that Rodríguez would assume “the office of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in order to guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the Nation.””

Hopefully he is not the mole that helped carry out the crime.

Trump had a long-term obsession with territory expansion, and this is probably only the start.

The thing for him is that he thinks he is going to have a place in History if he can expand either territories and influence, then people are going to remember him, and that would be his legacy, but this probably backfires big time with his base, who are mostly isolationists.

I watched a comment somewhere on TV a couple of months ago, the guy compared Trump to a cat, peeing everywhere and hope it's scents stick, this is probably a long line of stuff that's going to "wow" us in the next 3 years, and probably not going to be on a good way.

He is leaving a legacy, but I fear it is one of overextension. The GWOT should have taught us that overextension only buys rivals time to build up. This is just another reason China loves Trump so much; bogging down the US in the western hemisphere, and giving Carte Blanche to the most powerful actors in the eastern hemisphere.

Or is this just posturing by generals that sold out? It could be a new form of modified guerrilla war, but everyone now is questioning if enough of the Venezuelan military elites have the will to resist, or this is just a show to maintain order and handover power in due course.

Venezuela got a fatal case of Dutch disease. Maduro could have rebalanced the economy, invited more oil exploration (buying in good will in the US), with more balanced contracts (to allow his to spend more on social services without infantilizing the public) and limited his external foreign relations until his country was strong enough and economy diversified enough to support it, but he wanted to go fast with spreading around the money and not reinvesting it.

Now he rots in prison a few miles away from me.

Maduro did not have the popularity of Chavez, not even by a mile. He was a bus driver who found his way to the presidency.
He had no idea what he was doing. Chavez managed to control the poverty rate.
He lost the election, then declared the candidate was ineligible.

Yes, crippling sanctions severely hurt them. You have to play the geopolitical game. They should have made compromises with the U.S. and they would be in a lot better position. Not that I agree with what went down, you can’t make enemies of U.S. and prosper.
