Marco Rubio says free and fair Venezuela elections still priority as U.S. meets with Delcy Rodríguez


Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the United Nations said Venezuela’s future must include elections. The comments to media came after President Donald Trump met with acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez in New York.

Rubio said the administration has remained clear on that goal to Rodríguez, who was Vice President under Nicolás Maduro before his arrest on U.S. narcoterrorism charges in January.

“We discussed the steps that remain to make that happen. Debt restructuring is key to that. Obviously, you know we want to be helpful in that regard. It has to be done in the right way,” Rubio said.

“There has to be a political transition process, which is underway. Leadership from the 2015 National Assembly have been engaged now in regular talks with the interim authorities to create the groundwork and rebuild the institutions necessary in order to have free and fair elections in Venezuela, which is critical.”

The conversations happened as a number of Florida lawmakers have called for a faster timeline for elections. As recently as last week, several Florida officials demurred on any concrete expectations for when elections should occur.
