India has deliberately tried to keep Bangladesh's military weak!

During the regime of Sheikh Hasina, India is alleged to have weakened the military power of Bangladesh by influencing it secretly. The aim is to prevent the Bangladesh Army from posing any strategic challenge to India. After the fall of the Hasina government, Bangladesh is enjoying a real taste of independence – militarily and economically. The country of 170 million people has only 8 MiGs, 29 fighter jets.

Which proves that the country's military sector has been neglected during Hasina's tenure. On the other hand Pakistan is much stronger militarily despite facing economic challenges. According to the Global Firepower Index 2024, Pakistan's military is ranked 9th in the world.

Pakistan's Air Force in particular is remarkably strong - it has the JF-17, 25 J-10C fighter jets at its disposal. Pakistan has bagged another multi-million dollar contract to supply 12-MFI-17 Super Mushhak trainer aircraft to Zimbabwe. It does not end here. The Pakistan Air Force has approximately 65,000 full-time personnel (including 3,000 pilots) and currently operates approximately 883 aircraft. China has offered Pakistan Air Force (PAF) J-31 stealth fighter. Turkey's modern guns are also in Pakistan's arsenal. Here another thing should not be forgotten in the Muslim world only Pakistan has nuclear power.

For the sake of its own security, India has always wanted the military forces of Bangladesh to remain weak. And that is why the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has helped India without increasing the allocation in the military department. India knows that if Bangladesh's military forces start to strengthen, the balance in the region could be disturbed. After the fall of Hasina, Bangladesh's main goal should now be to strengthen the country's economic and military sectors. Bangladesh can strengthen and improve its military with military assistance from Pakistan, which it does not get from India. The Pakistan-Bangladesh partnership could emerge as a new force in the South Asian region to counter any foreign power, especially India.

A Hasina-free Bangladesh is now focused on building its own military, where India will not be overshadowed. The future of Bangladesh is bright. So there is no need to be a puppet of Bangladesh. In the coming days, Pakistan-Bangladesh may create a new equation in the South Asian region, especially by putting pressure on India. Finally, India's days of snubbing Bangladesh's military are over.

Bangladesh's real independence will follow after it has secured it's borders, it's economy, it's water from indian aggression. Getting more guns won't change anything if you have to ask permission each time you clean it. Even the the recent order of ammunition from Pakistan was first cleared with India. I wouldn't read too much into these recent attempts to look sovereign until Bangladesh can secure it's economy from indian sanctions.

I find this disturbing. who took permission from India? was it current interim government?

"Sources in the security establishment said the Indian Government had been informed of the development and added that the order from Bangladesh was for thousands of rounds of ammunition to be delivered in three tranches, starting September.

The order was placed just days after Hasina quit."

You would never hear of Pakistan telling Iran about it's ammunition purchase from china.

It's continuation of Hasina's policy of appeasing India and seeking a sort of no objection certificate before visiting china each time.

Bangladesh has a long way to get out of the indian hedgemony.

Because that's what Bangladesh can afford. Can't expect to have a large military with a tiny struggling economy and non-existent military industrial base.

Because Pakistan is controlled by the army and they've spent a larger chunk of their money and forex on weapons procurement than they should've been despite severe economic challenges. Their military is more than half the size of India, with an economy a dozen times smaller.

Your annual budget is lower than provincial budgets of many Indian states, let alone Indian federal budget. Good luck if you think you have deep enough pockets to import large amounts of weapons, especially during a forex shortage.

No neighbours can "counter" us in any way. At best be an irritant. Trying to poke India due to small man syndrome isn't the smartest of ideas.

Debt riddled tiny failing economies put together can't put any real pressure on India. As I said, it'll be mere irritants at max attempting at reviving insurgency or infiltration. Beyond that there is no visible pressure one can put on a large and fast growing economy like India.

Sheikh Hasina could not have survived so long without the support of the military. When the military decided to withdraw its support, she fled. So in other words, BD military was always in charge and kept itself weak. The real reason is that they are really fuckin dumb and lazy, really corrupt and most importantly, totally broke. Theres only so much you can afford when all you do is manufacture underwear.

I think what has happened in Bangladesh has exposed the lie that a neighbor needs to directly counter India in a military sense. The change in Bangladesh has put up a serious security dilemma that for India had been to some extent resolved in 1971 but the August 5 'revolution' has upended that entire calculation and put a noose around India's neck which it cannot easily reverse courtesy of Uncle Sam. In this scenario Bangladesh has not countered India in any way but has created a huge security problem for New Delhi that only few truly understand.

They are smarter I'll say, they never wasted money on useless weapons procurements as they know India isn't their enemy. Only ones who think India is their enemy are fanboys with small man syndrome who feel the urge to create "enemies" to to elevate the status of their largely ignored nation.

Bangladesh hasn't created any security problem for India. It is just a source of illegal infiltration towards India, like it always has been. Nothing much has been changed except.

You are right Bangladesh itself has not directly created a security dilemma for India but the political change in the country and its current direction has created a noose around India neck stretching from the Silguri Pass to the Northeast and towards Myanmar. While nothing appears to have changed in reality everything has. In effect this is a reversal of 1971 but now the threat does not come from Pakistan ...

Unsubstantiated and baseless claims. Typical Indian govt narrative to defend Hasina in hopes of reinstating her or her family members back to Bangladeshi politics in future.

If military was always in charge, Hasina wouldn't have needed to commit the BDR massacre and wrongfully terminate and retire 100s of army officers from 2009 to 2023. There would have been absolutely no need of recruiting and promoting pro BAL unqualified officers to 2 and 3 star level general ranks. These actions alone debunk your nonsense claim.

Bangladesh and India aren’t enemies that would require Bangladesh to arm its defence forces to create a deterrent against India.

The resources required would have debilitating impact on its tiny economy. Bangladesh surpassed Paksiatn on various fronts after its separation in 1971 due to its focus on economy and not a ghost enemy.

There are few differences between both the nations but not big enough to trigger an armed conflict.

Even the seemingly anti-India dispensation in Bangladesh knows this well and wouldn’t create mountain out of mole hill.

Give or take, India deliberately kept it's textile industry without any subsidies or incentives. Leaving most of the RMG sectors to BD, India got less infiltration and people looking for jobs crossing illegally and BD got job opportunities for its people. Add to that, militancy in NE lost its edge. It doesn't matter who is in power in BD. India couldn't care any less about SHW although it's unlikely we give her up to some sham trials, as long as they satisfy our needs, they can grow their military or whatever.

Bangladesh has always been a threat. It is not something new. India played down the threat due to Hasina's assurance. Nevertheless, the reality is that BD military was always in charge and always posed a threat which Hasina only moderated. It is now out in the open and India can now flex muscles with greater ease.

The insurgency in Assam, Manipur, NE states were always from arms supply from Bangladesh which happened even during Hasina's regime. So, it is pointless to say anything has changed on the ground except that India is now more free to act

Bangladesh was never really a threat since its military was always much smaller than India's but India was always a threat to Bangladesh which both the BNP and AL governments failed to respond. Regardless of this the change of government in Bangladesh does not justify India flexing its muscles which would be hard to justify to America and the West hence my referring to a security dilemma for India.

The insurgency in the Northeast was not spurred by arms supply from Bangladesh which was miniscule but from China and which ended in the late 1980's. The only reason Bangladesh tolerated and assisted the Indian insurgent groups was because India had since the 1970's been fomenting an insurgency in the CHT.

As mentioned earlier the political change in Bangladesh does not permit India the freedom to act as nothing yet justifies it ...
