In 1962, there was an ethnic Uyghur cavalry unit, the Third Independent Cavalry Regiment of the Xinjiang Military Region, fighting in the Karakoram Mountains on the western front of the Sino-Indian border self-defense counterattack.
The total number of troops engaging in the war on the Western Front was about 6,300. Among them, 800 soldiers fought in the Third Cavalry Regiment. It was the only regiment scale unit on the entire Western Front fought in the 1962 war.
