Xinjiang Uyghur war heros in the China-India 1962 border war

In 1962, there was an ethnic Uyghur cavalry unit, the Third Independent Cavalry Regiment of the Xinjiang Military Region, fighting in the Karakoram Mountains on the western front of the Sino-Indian border self-defense counterattack.

The total number of troops engaging in the war on the Western Front was about 6,300. Among them, 800 soldiers fought in the Third Cavalry Regiment. It was the only regiment scale unit on the entire Western Front fought in the 1962 war.

By November 18, 1962, The Third Cavalry Regiment successfully completed their self-defense counterattack mission. A total of 293 Indian troops were killed, 165 Indian troops were captured, and a large amount of weapons and equipment were seized. 43 Indian military strongholds were uprooted, all Indian troops were driven out of our area on one side of the actual line of control , and our territory invaded and occupied by the Indian army was recovered.
 
The Chinese government issued a statement on November 21, 1962, stating that the Chinese border defense forces would implement a total ceasefire on the Sino-Indian border from 0:00 on December 22. The Chinese troops will withdrawn 20 kilometers from the line of control between China and India .

In accordance with the orders of the Central Military Commission, The Third Cavalry Regiment troops returned to their barracks . Along the way, they were warmly welcomed by the locals.

PLA Cavalry units still exist in Xinjiang today. Tourists capture mounted PLA soldiers in Xinjiang
 
Cavalry units in Xinjiang now are mostly for border control, no longer serve as combat units

On the Qingming Day ( Chinese Tomb sweeping and ancestor worshipping day)this week, retired PLA soldier who participated in 1962 war against India tells their heroic stories to the children in Xinjiang how they bravely and fearlessly fought and defeated Indian aggressors and defended mother China's western borders in 1962.

On the Qingming Day ( Chinese Tomb sweeping and ancestor worshipping day)this week, schools in Xinjiang orgnize trips to hero cemeteries to pay respect.
Xinjiang younger generations honor the fallen heros who sacrificed their lives for this peaceful and prosperous life of today's Xinjiang.
