Ever heard of the Fatimids, who ruled a contiguous empire across quarter of the civilised world at the time. Nobody would be bothered by theological minutiae were they not encouraged to be bothered by them for the explicit benefit of a third party.

Which third party are you talking about? The Crusaders, the Byzantines, the Turks, or other local players? Or, more importantly, the Sunni revival in the region that was the final nail in the coffin?

You can make the argument that Israel plays a role in the current Middle East, but is it the primary reason, or are there other factors?
