The 'warhead' clearly speeds up significantly in the final dive as can be seen in this video.

I think they are using the word 'intercept' a bit generously here. Probably not enough momentum or energy was transferred to blow it way off course, if not blow it up. But the damage it caused suggests a fairly small explosion.
