Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu has been granted a service extension by the federal government in recognition of his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Mursoos, a decisive military response following an Indian missile strike earlier this month.
Under Sidhu’s command, the Pakistan Air Force swiftly retaliated, downing five Indian aircraft, including three Rafale jets, a MiG-29, an SU-series fighter, and an Israeli-origin Heron drone. The engagements occurred across multiple regions, notably Bhatinda, Jammu, Srinagar, Akhnoor, and Avantipur.
The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, praised the Air Force’s precision and professionalism, highlighting Sidhu’s role in safeguarding national airspace during heightened hostilities. The extension, approved unanimously, ensures continuity in command amid ongoing regional tensions.
The meeting also resolved to confer national honours on military personnel, veterans, and civilians who contributed to the operation’s success.
Earlier, General Asim Munir was promoted to field marshal for his strategic leadership during the same conflict, underscoring a rare moment of dual recognition in Pakistan’s military history.
