Do you really think this is about NYC and it's Mayoral election? There is global interest in this, because people have framed as Democratic Socialism Vs Right Wing populism.

The majority of people in democracies want to have the sort of society that democratic socialism promises to deliver - however by far the representatives of the left/centre left have in recent years shifted to either the centre and the centre right, and the right has shifted to the far right. What was considered right wing years ago, is today the centre.

This is due to the influence and control of the global elite who have siphoned off wealth, and using the media which they own - blamed immigration and traditional dog whistle racism to distract from the inequality caused by hyper capitalism.

Mamdami's victory was watched keenly around the world by those in democratic countries with left leaning views - wanting to see what could be learnt and implemented at home. I followed Bernie Sanders with the same enthusiasm in the democratic primaries against Clinton. Similarly I was a card carrying member of momentum in support of Jeremy Corbyn.

Only problem is they have an illegals, drugs and crime problem and he thinks a soft approach is the best way to deal with it. People like this live in their little bubbles. Trump sees the reality of life.

Abducting children from schools and other public places, violent arrests of hard working mothers and fathers will not have a significant effect on crime.

And his policies on policing, especially with respect to hiring social workers or mental health workers to respond to certain situations, there are a lot of studies that argue in favor of that approach.

Look to be honest with you, I don't care about this Indian, now naturalized US citizen. What annoys me is how some rather naive and ignorant Muslims are trying to spin his largely irrelevant election win as something related to Muslims or Islam.

I did not claim anything, I gave my own opinion, not as a fact, but as something "probable" hence my use of the word "probably".

I have no interest in finding his political views and comparing them with Islamic principles etc. A good start would be to see the state of his Syrian wife and how he is parading her without even a hijab, for me to have an idea what type of Muslim he is.

Lastly his win, objectively speaking, has no barring on Muslims worldwide, I would even go as far and claim that even within NYC his election will change nothing for Muslims. Doubtful that Muslims in NYC will have any more or less rights than they already have.

As I side note, I don't particularly like rich kids pretending to be populists socialists/using empty slogans for the sake of gaining political power regardless of their origin or religion. Even less so when left-leaning.

It is strange, that on a Pakistani forum, this Indian is almost worshipped as some kind of deity and any type of criticism is almost taken as a personal attack by quite a few users here.

Your reaction to my first post is a good example of this (which 2 users agreed with, the only one that gave a negative reaction was the resident Iranian regime bootlicker, Watander).

I honestly don't care about the 100's of Arab politicians, ministers, mayors, governors, presidents (in Latin America there have been numerous ones), unless I specifically agree with them or unless I see them changing Western foreign policies/the system, which so far every Muslim politician in the West has failed to do.

Looking at some of his views he is probably only Muslim by name.

I don't get the enthusiasm anyway, he is part of the system and nothing major will change. Cheap populism. When New Yorkers will realize that most of his opportunistic promises cannot be implemented, he will be kicked out in 4 years time. With no ability to run for US president he will be a footnote.

Yet to see a single Muslim-origin politician in the West actually change anything or work against the same system that elected him/her.

At most he might be a marginally better choice for the Muslims of NYC than those he lost to but not sure if their lives are going to change in any way from today onwards by this Indian guys election win.

Looking at it from the outside, I don't get the hype at all.

Reminds me of the nonsense that people, large portion of Muslims included, were paddling when Obama was elected back in 2008.

Calling a person Muslim by name only is totally unfair.

Whether he does salat or not is between him and Allah.
