European Defence News and Discussions

THAAD and Arrow aren't in Ukraine. The SAMP-T and Patriot aren't systems that you'll use to shoot down cheap drones with. They shoot down cruise missiles, they shoot down ballistic missiles, the occasional bomber or fighter jet.
I hope you are aware of what Iran did to THAAD and Arrow n Israel. They were successful only against the old scud variants that were mostly used as decoys not solid fuel MRBMs plus hypersnics.

However, i agree that Russia does not face that amount of firepower on its immediate borders.

Iran not only deters Israel but also NATO's forces in Iraq, Syria and their assets all around Persian gulf.

its right there is not 100 percent interception with any system with laser it will be closer to 100 % and alot cheaper to intercept need 1000 kilowat to intercept balistic mirv and hypersonic missels along way to go for this powefull laser from what i know usa is the most advanced in this field they working on 500 kw right now

Can you guys do a piece on Chinese and Russians AD systems as well?

Highly unlikely. Its a matter of space militarization. USA has spent almost 500 bn$ over the last decade on projects associated to deterring incoming ICMB threats. All failed already.

The real scientists in USA call it unfeasible, Trump the thief in charge calls it a money bag. Reviving something that already existed under the code name golden dome is Trump's personal joke. Its a good plan for receiving huge amount of budget.

Israel's air launched ballistic missiles fired from Iraqi airspace seriously damaged Iranian S-300PMU2 and its subsytems.

They appeared vulnerable to ALBMs fired from close range. If it was not Iraqi airspace, Iran could detect them earlier with early warning assets but its truly hard to intercept them when fired from zero distance from your borders.

However internal sabotage that led to destruction of Iranian radar sites and command center played a key role to leaving S-300 bare to ALBMs. The connection to early warning radars was lost and S-300 was left alone.

Chinese systems are not battle tested.

I read about this the other day. It should be great as a replacement if the Mirage 2000. If we manage to buy a whole squadron in the future to counter the possibility of brand new Turkish Eurofighter Tranche 5 going in active service in the next few years.

Greece has moved to restart talks with Israel over acquiring several advanced air defense systems as part of its multilevel protection network, known as “Achilles’ Shield,” a central pillar of the country’s 12-year Medium-Term Defense Armament Plan.

The unfreezing of negotiations opens the way for the likely procurement of three Israeli-made systems that would replace outdated anti-aircraft weapons and cover three layers of threats.

The Spyder system by Rafael is expected to succeed the aging Russian-made OSA-AK and TOR-M1 systems, which face long-standing maintenance and parts shortages.

The Barak MX system, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) – which also owns Greece’s Intracom Defense – would replace the reliable but aging Hawk units.

Athens is also discussing the acquisition of the David’s Sling system, in its SkyCeptor version, to defend against long-range and ballistic missile threats and to replace the S-300s, whose support from Russia has become increasingly unfeasible.

It goes without saying that the Patriot systems of the Air Force remain the backbone of the country’s air defense.

The talks had been paused amid Israel’s military operations in Gaza to avoid political criticism over potential weapons transactions. With the ceasefire now in effect, Athens decided to resume the program, underscoring its strategic importance for Greece’s air defense architecture

The initial cost of the Achilles’ Shield project is estimated at just under €3 billion, enough to protect Thrace and the eastern Aegean islands, with expansion to other areas planned over time. The program also envisions coverage against aerial and naval drone threats.

Israeli proposals currently hold an advantage over European consortiums due to strong technology transfer commitments. In the coming period, procedural developments are expected first within the Defense Ministry, then at the Government Council for National Security (KYSEA), and finally in Parliament.

Bah!
What is wrong with the Greek government are they blind to NATO products? Do their weapons have some sort of Kosher blessing?
The weird thing is that Mitsotakis was the one(along with the President of Poland at the time)in 2024 or 2023,I don't remember exactly when, who talked about a common European AA shield and about EU countries buying and supporting the EU defence industry. And instead of buying from France(SAMP-T and MICA VL for example)or Germany(Iris-T SLM)or let's say NASAMS 2/3 from Norway,he's gone towards Israel.

And we could at least buy from EuroSpike and EuroPuls, which is the branch in Germany I think,he went straight to the source.

But to be honest, that also has to do with the geopolitical shifts in the region. It's because of Erdogan's actions that we've turned to Israel. Syria has fallen and is now a Turkish vassal in effect. Libya was divided and now Haftar as well is pro-Turkish. Egypt has restored relations with Turkey and even Russia is currently in good terms with them.
So who's left? Israel, which sees Turkey as a threat right now and happens to be a country with serious firepower, defence industry and support from USA. Also, very close to Cyprus, that's why the Cypriots have dealings with them.

Well, gotta replace those OSA AKM,Tor-M1 and I-HAWK PIP III systems. I'd prefer a combination of French and Norwegian systems, but the government is interested in the Israeli deal because of a good ToT offer apparently.

Don't trust them brother.

They have back door access. Case report:

There was a 2021 incident where the Australian Army withdrew an Elbit Systems battlefield management system due to security concerns, including a reported "backdoor access".

But I get your point.

Ideally,SAMP-T would have been great since we're getting FDI HN frigates with Aster-30. And we use MICA missiles on the Rafale and Mirage 2000-5 Mk.II and that would make sense to buy MICA and upgrade to MICA NG in the future.
