Pakistan, Afghanistan test quieter diplomacy

Both sides step back from public rhetoric to reset ties; Pakistan insists on verifiable counterterror steps

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan appear to be making a renewed but cautious push to overcome their deep-seated differences over the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), with recent developments suggesting a deliberate effort by both sides to tone down public posturing even as a broader breakthrough remains elusive.

While a visible stalemate persists on core security concerns, particularly Islamabad's demand that Afghan soil must not be used for cross-border attacks, behind-the-scenes diplomacy seems to have yielded at least one tangible outcome: a lowering of rhetoric and an emphasis on dialogue over confrontation.

Sources said mediators wanted both sides to at least lower public rhetoric in order to create a positive atmosphere for talks.

According to them, mediators persuaded the Taliban regime in Kabul to take certain steps such as issuing Fatwa and unambiguous public statement from their leadership on addressing Pakistan's security concerns.

This shift has been reflected in a series of carefully worded statements from Kabul and Islamabad over the past week, following a significant religious intervention by Afghan clerics.

The reference to a defined time window suggests Islamabad is seeking early indicators of change, rather than open-ended assurances. For now, both sides appear to be calibrating their approach, avoiding escalation in public, welcoming conciliatory language, and allowing religious actors to play a mediating role.

Whether this softer tone translates into concrete action on the ground remains uncertain. Still, the recent exchange of statements marks a departure from the sharp rhetoric that has characterised much of the past year, offering a narrow opening for engagement at a time when both Islamabad and Kabul face mounting internal and regional pressures.

So then

Are the TTP decreasing their activities?
Seems to be allot of silence recently?

Is the pressure with periodic killing sprees working?

The Taliban and TTP have been put under enormous pressure. Both militarily, politically through third parties and economically.

Also, the border is still closed and there is no trading. Afghans are being repatriated in their thousands on a daily basis. There is real pressure on Afghanistan.

There are still approximately 2 million Afghans inside Pakistan according to latest UNHCR estimates. Pakistan must at all cost repatriate the remaining Afghans until Trump presidency. If Pakistan squanders this opportunity, it won't have another chance easily. Repatriate them all and don't allow to return them.

If the Democrats return to office, Pakistan will be pressured to keep the Afghan refugees. We all know how our leaders fold under US pressure.

Afghans don't want peace but they are getting economically and logicistically royally screwed by Pakistan so the savages aka taliban are backing down.

The Afghan nationalists are still living in their fantasy world. Hoping that they can reunify KPK and Balochistan. There is absolutely no chance of any peace with Afghanistan. The Taliban are as worse as other Afghan factions. They all have the same agenda which is to destroy Pakistan.

This is the right moment to repatriate the Afghans inside Pakistan. The world doesn't give a crap and are also restricting Afghans. There truly is Afghan fatigue. Many Western countries have dumped Afghans all over the region and are refusing to take them in. Broken promises for Afghans.

Many Afghans are hiding inside Pakistan. They don't leave their place of stay anymore. They are afraid of being caught and repatriation. Pakistan needs to do the necessary. There should also be very harsh discipline against officers who are caught taking bribes from Afghans and in return allow them to remain inside Pakistan.

Pakistan should also round up UNHCR offices and staff that support Afghan refugees. Their time is up. The UNHCR has played a very negative role in Pakistan.

ALL afghans are vehemently anti-Pakistani and seek our complete death and destruction. The mass deportation of afghans and the closure of the border have brought the afghans to their knees. That is why they cannot pay government salaries and are acting like good little boys seeking reconciliation with Pakistan. They thought that they could withstand any sanctions we impose on them. Yes, NOW is the time to kick ALL afghans out of Pakistan and send them home. Once that is done, PERMANENTLY seal the border and let NOTHING come in or go out. Do this for 10 years and watch afghanistan destroy itself and implode in a way that has NEVER EVER been seen before. That would PERMENANTLY solve the afghan problem once and for all. To destroy afghanistan, Pakistan does NOT need to fire a single bullet. We just need to continue the above strategy for 10 years. NOTHING more.

The India, Iran and Central Asia ploy hasn't worked. The Indian air bridge idea is unfeasible. The Afghans are in private yearning for a re-opening of the border for trade and smuggling. It would be catastrophic if Pakistan decided to reopen.

I agree. Just by keeping the border closed and continued repatriation of Afghans many issues would be resolved instantly. In fact, as we speak many security related issues have already been resolved. The impact is visible.

The air bridge/corridor between india and afghanistan is way too expensive and not economically viable. In fact it has been a an economic disaster for afghanistan. Iran has been weakened alot and the Central Asian states are very wary and dismissive of afghanistan.

Keeping the border closed and sending the afghans back is seriously damaging afghanistan and having minimal affect on Pakistan. Terrorism and suicide attacks have significantly dropped in Pakistan. I would go further and say this has had a profoundly positive affect on Pakistan. If Pakistan can kick ALL afghans out of Pakistan and boot them all home PERMANENTLY, seal the border where NOTHING comes in or goes out for AT LEAST 10 years, Pakistan's security problems would MASSIVELY improve and afghanistan would implode in a way that has NEVER EVER been seen before.

The security of Pakistan and the sacredness of the lives of Pakistani citizens is FAR FAR more important that ANY economic benefits we can get. It's about time we Pakistanis start valuing the lives of OUR OWN people and start helping OUR OWN people first BEFORE we help anyone else.

The Taliban were sitting there with the diversion map in hand when Uncle Trump pulled the main switch from behind.
Son, if you're going to use Afghanistan's land against Pakistan, then in the name of aid, you'll only get the bare minimum from now on—dollars are out of the question, even prayers from America have gone off on a diversion somewhere else. Have fun 😂💸
