Short answer; PoopjeetsLooks like Bangladesh wants to phase out Russian weapons.
BTR-80 is out of the way. Wonder why they took so long to replace it.
I hope an actual defence minister will be in charge after the elections.
Existing BTR-80s are not going anywhere. Just too many to replace.Looks like Bangladesh wants to phase out Russian weapons.

RWS cannot distinguish between UPDF and PCJSS insurgents. Type-88 manned by a Gopali gunner would integrate seamlessly with the Awami Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system.Definitely Bangladesh Army. No one else, in there right mind will choose a manned machine gun over a remote weapon station.

Russian equipment needs to be phase out ASAP. Other than aircraft, Turkey can replace every Russian equipment with cheap nato standard equipment.Existing BTR-80s are not going anywhere. Just too many to replace.
A BTR overhauling facility has been set up recently at 902 Combined Workshop (EME) in Rajendrapur to localise maintenance.
However, we do need to move on to better designs for any future procurement of APCs - BTR-80 is a death trap by design due to the lack of a rear entry/exit door and poor mine resistance.
How broke are they to keep using ancient type-56s.RWS cannot distinguish between UPDF and PCJSS insurgents. Type-88 manned by a Gopali gunner would integrate seamlessly with the Awami Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system.

On a serious note:
while I can see that a human gunner could potentially have better peripheral vision and situational awareness in close combat, I am not quite confident that tipped the scale for this procurement decision.
Bangladesh Army consistently struggles to adopt new technologies and concepts, and as a result tends to take the 'easy' way out.
I was about to post the below seperately but now this seems relevant to the above:
BA has just released a tender to procure 1020 units of Type 56-1 Assault Rifle!!View attachment 169403
Now, I do realise this is a miniscule quantity of rifles being bought relative to the size of the fighting force.
I also acknowledge that army rifles need constant replacement to keep up with operational demands, and it is convenient to process more of the usual.
However, could we not have taken this opportunity to select and commence roll out of a next generation standard issue rifle system, instead of taking the lazy way out yet again?
