Trade deficit widens to $19b

Those bridges and fancy electric busses aren't going to come by themselves ;)

But they do make for good Tiktoks.
There is no harm in fixing the issues but it should neither be at the cost of rising inflation (the Government should lower it's development spending for a few years at the cost of it's political mandate which it wants to earn through public projects) or at the cost of forex (imports which can be deferred for a few years and we make do with resources already available).

But political governments cannot be expected to make tough decisions and lose their political mandate for the next elections. This is where the establishment can make a difference.

@Sainthood 2.0

I wonder what's causing this sharp decline in exports

Global trade disruption. Countries which can afford to subsidise exports to deal with protectionist duties in US (and elsewhere) are able to still maintain or even increase exports. Countries with limited fiscal and external financing space - PAK for eg- are bearing the brunt.

Regards

There should be a National Emergency imposed in Pakistan for the next 10 years and anyone who speaks against the establishment or the Government should be imprisoned without any formal trial. Let the damn Government and establishment do their jobs and try to dig Pakistan out of the mess which was created by Imran Khan and which his damned followers continue to create for Pakistan all over the world.

Calling for a 10 year National Emergency and the imprisonment of citizens without trial is not a solution, it is a direct violation of the most basic human rights guaranteed under international law. No country in the world has ever achieved stability by suspending due process, silencing dissent, or criminalizing criticism. These are the hallmarks of authoritarianism, not nation‑building.

International human rights frameworks including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights explicitly prohibit arbitrary detention, guarantee the right to a fair trial, and protect freedom of expression. Pakistan is a signatory to these commitments. Demanding mass imprisonment without trial is not only unconstitutional, it places Pakistan in open defiance of global legal standards.

Silencing citizens does not ‘let the government do its job.’ It removes accountability, encourages abuse of power, and deepens the very crises you claim to oppose. Nations progress when institutions are strengthened, not when they are weaponized against their own people.

Blaming one political leader or his supporters for every national problem oversimplifies decades of structural failures. Pakistan’s challenges economic, institutional, and political cannot be solved by suspending rights or suppressing voices. They require transparency, reform, and public participation, not fear and coercion.

If the goal is to ‘dig Pakistan out of a mess,’ then the path forward must be rooted in law, justice, and democratic principles, not in abandoning them.

The surplus was driven primarily by increased remittance inflows and strict controls on imports, particularly on non‑essential and capital-goods imports. These factors make for good headlines, but they did so by suppressing demand and limiting the economy’s capacity to grow, not by generating sustainable increases in productivity, exports, or investment.
Duh, yes Mr Obvious.

This is the way. Only buy what we can afford and not import everything left, right and centre on loans like it has been repeatedly done in the past leading to balance of payment crises each time.

On PDF, every PTI Shaikh Chilli is an Economic Scientist without realising they're just regurgitating the same nonsense that the ISI brainwashed them with in the first place between October 2011 - May 2021.

Here's you Current Account figures between 2013-2025. Can you please tell us what happened to Current Account in 2025 without an emotional rant?

(I've also clearly highlighted the double digits figures so you won't have a hissy fit, brother).

Massive import of vaccine??? What does all the free vaccine have to do with anything? Almost all the vaccine was from donations, and we hardly had to spend anything out of the budgeted 150 million USD for vaccine!

Here:

“Pakistan imported Vaccines for human medicine , worth 3,195,511.24 (US$ Thousands)”

That’s USD 3.2 billion. Also post COVID commodity prices spiked. That was neither the case in the last year of PMLN (when they did 20 billion CAD) nor is it now the case where import is spiking.

This breakdown of import spike in 2021 was given by Gohar Ejaz while explaining the fear of so called boom and bust cycle. Not by PTI.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to search through his interviews. I believe it was with Kamran Khan, maybe you can try and look for it.

As for the 2013-2018 period and CAD issue, why do you lot so conveniently forget the massive procurements and imports for CPEC during that period? How about the J-10's and all the armaments that we recently purchased and used to defeat India? What about the Billions being paid to China for all that weapons import including the 8 Submarines?

Yes and those mismanaged CPEC project of overcapacity is now also contributing to high energy prices leading to export decline and exporters crying.

J-10C procurement was initiated and concluded during PTI government around the same time. Also SH15 and other important weapons procurements including frigates and OPVs for navy.

The 8 submarine contract is spread over 15 years. We don’t pay everything upfront when the deal was done.

And if we have indeed imported a Billion USD worth of mobile phones for internal consumption, it is the worst thing that we could have done. Wasting precious USD on meaningless luxuries is a damn disaster and these are the things that the Government should somehow convince IMF to allow the blocking of.
Yes.

No Government can work in peace under current circumstances. The polarized society is at its extreme, the only thing that the opposition is good at is cursing, blocking, breaking, damaging, trolling and causing havoc all over the world. The highly politicized, or rather, cult following in the country has become a serious challenge. And all this from people who have forgotten that IK was losing all the by-elections and was well on his way out of power.

The only thing that expedited his exit was the decision for selection of the new Army Chief. If that was not the case, IK’s politics would have died a natural death as his graph was already at its lowest in years by 2022. Granted that this Government hasn’t done miracles, which at times is simply not possible. They have, however, steadied the ship somewhat and if they can somehow fix the export issue, they would have a lot to celebrate.

However, none of that is the problem, the real problem is the celebration by a certain group at the incumbent not being able to perform miracles. The inability is cheered and celebrated; is this for the sake of Pakistan??? These enemies of Pakistan, disguised as Pakistanis, are a very big problem for the unrest and the reaction of the Government and LEAs.

That the cheapest shot that politicians pick everytime they are out of real responses. I can agree that the establishment has messed up things repeatedly but to place all the blame at them, all the time, is just quite unfair.

And the establishment may have messed up many times, however, their has always been a politician to provide them support; without support of sellout politicians, establishment could not have had such a massive role in Governance, which they have today. So place some blame on the politicians too, to be fair and reasonable.
