So are they going to be configured to hunt down drones?

These performed pretty poorly in Ukraine. Anyone can pull up videos of MI helicopters being taken down by manpads during the Ukraine invasion/early war.

I remember seeing a video early in the war when 10+ of them were flying into Ukraine and hidden short range air defense and manpad teams shot multiple ones down.

The KA-52 took decent losses as well, but faired better than the MI attack helicopters due to its electronic suite.

This purchase doesn’t really make sense at this time, as helicopters are mostly ground attack assets and not what Iran needs at this particular time. Even if this order was placed 3-4 years ago, still doesn’t make sense. Attack helicopters should be the least of Iran’s concern right now.

Maybe this was all that Russia was offering Iran for its Shahed assistance. We keep hearing about SU-35’s that are coming next year, sounds a lot like the SU-30/YAK-130s that Assad waited for.

I see no utility of these rather hi-tech attack helis. Iran is facing no armored invasion, their utility against drones is far less than what a domestically built F-5 derivative can achieve. What are they for ? Mi-28 and Ka-52 both

IMO for CAS missions in Zahedan and Konarak they could cover perfectly well anti terrorist missions.
Helicopters are being used against balochi terrorists and those russian aircrafts have much more firepower and loitering time than Cobras.

Very shocking to hear Iran is spending money on these helicopters and not more Mig29/Su-35s! What Iran desperately needs is more airpower. This procurement shows a lack of strategic procurement planning or thinking in Iran. While they may form some "function" in Iran, it is not what Iran urgently needs.

Its a good investment for border patrols + uav knock down

Probably you are right but Iran has a HUGE UCAV fleet. If they want to chase enemy drones then build local F-5s

F5 Kowsars are perfect for chasing Israeli OWA drones the long range Harops and others are launch even from small boats in the coastline.
M6 and Shaheds 129 are perfectly for patrolling during hours in all eastern areas.
But Mi28/Ka52 are mobile artillery. They have enough firepower to sanitize areas or constructions where some terrorists are hidden after located by those UAV/UCAVs.

Correct. Probably the planners know something more practical on the ground that we dont.

In this video at 7:16 you can see how good are UAVs for surveillance. But when they enter houses and caves, mobile artillery with Mi28 or Ka52 can do it a good job.

Good. Also reminds us how much we need more powerful armaments on our UCAVs.

Locally built F-5 Kowsar can do that job 10 times more effectively for same price.
I’m not an Air Force tech guy but I would think cost of fuel short amount of time kowsar can maintain in the air versus a drone is far less cost effective and even helicopters near a point of the border would arrive faster if the distance isn’t to far and attack smugglers or military convoys quicker.
I’m telling you though a simorgh converted gunship would be awesome

Iran’s drones are limited by ground stations as they lack satellite data feeds. They also don’t do well in mountainous terrain where there is less signal. Not to mention they are slow. Most Iranian drones fly at less than 250 KM/HR.

Either way we still haven’t seen any evidence of these helicopters yet or the quantity.
