India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

Ram ram ji,

A joint statement has now been put out , so the agreement is now much more clearly defined.

Frankly, to my mind, it is an even bigger win for India than initial headlines suggested. Unlike most other countries, India has been able to protect the highly employment-sensitive agricultural sector and secured a formal commitment that the US will consider lowering the reciprocal tariff rate even further. Furher, Indian exports in many sectors will enjoy lower preferential tariffs or be completely tariff -free.

The 500 bn dollar buying of US goods is an aspirational intention and not a formal commitment under the agreement, but, given the explicit reference to Indian purchases of GPUs from the US (rather than China), I expect a large proportion of that to be accounted for by the new technology ventures of the Tatas, Ambanis, Adanis, etc and also the Indian subsidiaries of companies like Amazon, Google and Microsoft who have each already pledged tens of billions of investments in India.

All this talk of fully opening up India’s agri market is pure exaggeration. In reality, only a few items like DDGS, sorghum, and some niche products have seen limited access.

Even there, there is no price parity. US sorghum is hovering around Rs 23/kg before adding freight, insurance, and inland logistics. Once landed in India, it becomes far more expensive than domestic maize, which is around Rs 20/kg and sets the benchmark for energy source in animal feed. The same applies to DDGS etc they are simply not commercially viable to be imported at current prices even with 0% duty.

A small quantity of high value items like nuts and wine may enter, but India already imports nuts from the US anyway. So there is no meaningful 'flooding' of the Indian Agri market happening here. If you see my posts over the last few months, this is exactly what I have been saying.

Import of red sorghum and DDGS maybe competitive in Southern India which will benefit the poultry, dairy and even fishing industry in that region.

Regards

Sorghum will definitely not be viable in terms of price, but DDGS might be possible temporarily atleast at current high price in India...
