Assembly of Experts selects the new Supreme Leader. But there isn’t anyone who religiously qualifies as a high enough Ayatollah who isn’t a dinosaur in age themselves to be the new Supreme Leader.

So succession is going to be messy. Especially if multiple candidates were also killed (like his son).
