Hello from the FT newsroom, where we are busy covering the sixth day of the US and Israel’s war on Iran.
Missiles and drones are streaking across the Middle East, a vital energy highway is in paralysis and hundreds — including Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and six US soldiers — are confirmed dead. And yet, it remains unclear exactly why US President Donald Trump decided to launch this war — and therefore what might bring it to an end.
Current and former Israeli officials tell the FT that Israel is preparing for a multi-week military onslaught alongside the US to fully “dismantle” key pillars of Iran’s theocratic state. But as our US national editor Edward Luce writes, “anyone who claims to know where this conflict will go, including Trump, is bluffing”.
