Yup in the early days there was so much corruption people really have no idea. You could have unlimited hours on your timesheet if you were a contractor. Vendors were litrerally charging 1900 USD an hour for a refigerated truck to keep cakes and drinks fresh and cool for Camp Barber (Bastion 2) part of Camp Bastion.I had an Afghan colleague who went back to Afghanistan as an interpreter. He signed a 12-month contract that paid extremely well , enough to cover the cost of his house.
He shared some wild stories about how money was flowing with almost no oversight. According to him, a platoon commander (a lieutenant) would sometimes carry a briefcase full of cash to hand to a tribal leader, with little to no auditing.
He also mentioned contractors doing things like installing a metal door on a mud hut and billing $1M for what was supposedly a “reinforced command center.”
War is a massive business.
Then there logistic supply line corruptions. Anyway im going off topic. Sorry.
